First its wrong to call it a Madhuri lake, iocal take offense by naming it Madhuri. Its actual name is Sungester Lake. Trip advisor please correct the name. This lake is out of the world and maintained by Indian Army. The road to lake is bad, however once you reach this place you will feel you have missed something in your life if not visited here. Tourist are requested to kindly keep the place clean, as only Army is there to maintained the lake. A small canteen is there hence please carry your eatables with you. Must visit place.

The lake, previously the grazing ground, was formed due an earthquake in the region. The surrounding is so beautiful that one is living in heaven. Possible to visit as Bum La Pass was not accessible that day. No regret.

The travel to PT Tso lake as it was originally called is indeed incredibly beautiful formed by an devastating earthquake which left just tree stumps on a place which was once a grazing land. It's very unfortunate that the pristine glory and originality of the lake is allowed to be referred to as Madhuri lake just because a film shoot of an actress took place at the same lake . Shungatser lake or PT Tso lake is the original name and should be restored .

This is not your regular mountain lake. It was created as a result of an earthquake in an area full of trees. While the trees could not survive in water, the barks still stand amidst the lake waters which make for a distinct lake.

Its actual name is Sungester Lake, but due to shooting of film by Madhuri Dixit its know as Madhuri lake by tourist. But local take strong objection to calling it Madhuri. Its a amazing place, view is breathtaking. You have small eating joint out here and area is well maintained by Indian Army. Must visit during your Arunachal visit.

The view of Madhuri lake as we descend down the hills is beyond description. The lake is perched right in between 4 majestic hills and is mostly frozen at this time of the year. The sight of the hills, the lake and the chilled air around was making us delirious with wonder! I don’t think I will see anything this beautiful in my lifetime. There is a nice walking trail around the lake and it takes at least a good 30-40 minutes to circle the lake around this track. We walked around the lake and even met a couple of Indian Army soldiers who seemed excited to talk to outsiders and connect with the outside world. There is also a nice army cafeteria in the lake which serves hot Chai and Maggi noodles. Just a few kilometers ahead is a small gompa. The surrounding hills make for breathtaking views.

Everything in Tawang is best viewed when there is snow... there are innumerable lakes while going towards madhuri lake from tawang...and when we visited the place in mid-February; all the lakes are frozen or snow covered....
a deterrent though if there is heavy snowfall then it'll be an issue to visit the place but I think February is the best season when there is enough snow to get mesmerized by the beauty and its'also not tedious...
while returning back light snow fall and snow flakes are flying all around the vehicle...
there were many yaks and places near madhuri lake and route to Bumla is the best way to find yaks...we saw a brown yak that started running giving us a good sight...
the maggie and tea at army camp is again charming...and the places near lake offers ample opportunity for photo shoots...
just sitting there is really serene but alas, hilly locations like these give really little time to laze around

The drive to madhuri lake is painful but worth it. The real name of this lake is Sangetsar Lake . The beauty of the place will take your breath away. Though you will come across several lakes in the route from Tawang to Madhuri lake(40 kms) like PTso lake, Nagula lake and wetland complex, it is still recommended that you take this journey. The lake had been a reserved grassland some decades back but became a lake post an earthquake. There are several dead trees in the middle of the lake and form the background of very beautiful pictures. Since we had gone in February, most of the portion of the lake had been frozen. We spotted a few brahminy ducks in the water. The canteen maintained by the army sells quick bites like maggi, chola bhaturas, samosas apart from tea and coffee at a nominal price. The food does feel heavenly after all the pains you would have taken to reach there and re-enrgizes you for the journey back to Tawang. It had started snowing heavily while we were there and hence couldn't go further to Taktsang Gompa. Most of the tourists normally only go upto this lake and return. Please note that only Indian nationals are allowed up to this lake. The lake is also a sacred Buddhist area and you will find prayer flags around the periphery. A couple of yaks and mountain dogs can also be found in the grassland bordering this lake. Must visit if you are in Tawang.

Sangetsar Lake or Madhuri Lake was originally a grazing ground. During an earthquake in 1973, heavy landslide resulted in blocking a nearby stream and the most beautiful Sangetsar lake formed. You can still see the trunks of dead trees coming out of the lake. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, the lake is a must see while in Tawang.
We visited the lake while coming back from Bumla Pass. Bumla is at the top and Sangetsar is far below that level. Travelling this stiff road can be a challenge. I had 2 face headache. The strong cold wind blowing in the lake side was terrible. Some relief was the Military run canteen where we had hot tea and puri sabji.
On this route u can enjoy only 2 spots - bumla and madhuri lake. Although there are many lakes u wll find on the way, time wont permit u.

Hello All,
Any idea how to go from Tawang to Shonga-tser Lake (Madhuri Lake)? I will be going alone there. So booking a taxi only for me would be costly option. Is there Shared car or bus service available?
Thanks in Advance.

No, there are no shared/public transportation to Shuongatser Lake from Tawang town. A hired cab from Tawang to Bum La Pass and Shungatser Lake (both are usually covered together) will cost around Rs. 4500.
Probably this answer is too late, but might be helpful for other travelers.
