Great day trip with the family, enjoyed the history and the outdoor views of nature and the hills. I would recommend this to anyone who is in the area

Worth a quick look

If you are travelling to Sparti from Kalamata or vice versa it is worth a stop and a quick visit. Standing in front of the cave entrance you get a nice cold breeze hit you which is great on a hot day.

Don't try entering the cave as it is very dangerous.

Interesting Spot- Check from outside and don't enter unless you have speleological gear

It is located on the left side of the road connecting Sparta with Trypi village. You have to walk up to the hill in order to find the crevice. Fallen Rocks in past times have created some obstacles in entrance. Don't enter deeper apart from a couple of meters from the entrance unless you have speleological gear and experience as speleologist and even in that case never alone. The official research done by various Hellenic Speleological Societies and individuals proved that the only persons executed there where male adults and as found from historical research criminals.

Steep ravine just outside the village Trypi, on the road from Sparta to Kalamata, at an altitude of 750 meter. According to legend and tradition this would the place where the Spartans threw in their "ill-born" babies. However, the experts disagree whether there was actually any infanticide in ancient Sparta and while there were skulls and bones found in the cave these turned out to be from adult men. Be it as it may, if you come close, you will feel a chilly breeze coming out of the cavern, some say coming straight from Hades. Spooky place.
