Visited Patsos gorge with our family (ages 4 to 60-ish).
A very nice hiking trail in the gorge with super green and lush surroundings. The easy begining part is doable for even smaller kids and well worth a visit.
Next to the parking lot is also a taverna. Apparently the longest taverna in Crete. The place was sold out for lunch as we visited so could not eat there. Evwry table was reserved up front. And from the looks and smell of the open-fire cooking pits I dont wonder that it was! Would have loved to eat there.

6. 9. 2020 Breathtaking, adventurous hike through the canyon, the bottom of a dry river. 3 km of active movement through rugged terrain, where you climb some sections of rocks using ropes and ladders. Great. We, the amateurs, did it too. There is no other way back than to repeat the whole route back. I recommend to all more active people. Not suitable for small children. We couldn't get on an organised tour, so asked at the taxi rank outside the hotel! Best option out of the two! It was cheaper (the taxi driver waited for us to do the walk), we got there 3 hours before any of the buses and had done the walk before any other tourist came! If we had thought ahead we would have hired a car and taken ourselves.
It's hard work in places and we did end up scrambling up rocks on all fours! Ensure you have water, suitable footwear and insect repellent (lots of gnats!).

Staying in Rethymno, the Agios Antonios Gorge pops up as a to-do suggestion on TripAdvisor. Since the reviews are a bit random we also checked with our Bed & Breakfast staff and based on their feedback, headed in direction of
Patsos (the Gorge is also known as Patsos Gorge) on a rainy day. You can also enter Drymos Taverna on Google Maps to find the starting point of the Gorge hike.
Granted, the park is not well-maintained and the signage could use some upgrading. Basically the sanctuary is easy to find and most people should consider that as their destination. Those wanting an additional challenge can hike through the Gorge to the the water reservoir lake and return back the same way.
Just note this is not a normal walk but a fun canyoning type of a challenge including ropes, (mostly broken) ladders, partially supported steps, lots of way-finding and countless rocks and river crossings. When we did the hike it had been raining so the rocks and roots were wet and consequently quite slippery. But it was all part of fun.
After the sanctuary we chose the right side of the first bridge. After the second bridge the two trails converge so the decision does not make a massive difference although the left side appears slower.
Both trails have their share of adventure which is what makes it fun. Be prepared to get your shoes wet and your pants dirty. Depending on amount of water / recent precipitation you may stay dry or have no chance of keeping your feet dry. You will be balancing over rocks and sliding on your bottom as well as holding onto scary looking ropes as you rappel.
It's not technically challenging but not for you if you are not physically fit or are super scared of heights. Wear proper footwear (no sandals!) and I was glad to have a cap to protect my head as you end up squeezing through narrow passages.
It took us about 1:15 to the lake but under an hour to return because climbing up is easier than descending on wet rocks.
The Taverna at the start is massive but has a rapid service and relatively good prices. The portions are huge. Veggies are better value than their meat dishes.
The Gorge is a great fun experience which I would recommend especially with families teenagers and we liked it better than the Samaria Gorge in all its simplicity. Total time for Rethymno with a meal about 5-6h.

We went to this Gorge two days after taking the more famous Imbros (Impros) gorge.
Comparing the two, Impros has more intensive hiking and require some logistics to get back to the car.
St. Anthony Gorge is easier to walk, and is vivid in vegetation and water.
As it was only the beginning of the season (early April) , current water level is high and we had to take out our hiking boots to cross over some ponds, yet after the second wood bridge, when you reach the wooden ladders, water is streaming all over it, and if you don’t like to get soaking wet in freezing water, you need to turn around.
Getting there:
Using the great navigation system app "Waze", and local sim card with 1GB by "Wind"
(€15), we set destination to the village of "Pastos" – about 40Min drive from Rethymno.
About 1Km prior (north) to the village (Place the following numbers into google maps to see the junction 35.251622, 24.566374) there is a sing to the left (downhill) “Farangi Agios Antonios”, and another 500M on an unpaved road to the entrance at the following location (35.254925, 24.569992)
After the hike, we climbed to Pastos village center to a very nice tavern with great food and very welcoming hospitality, including self made wine, all at a local price.
Its even got Google street view image :

Just 30 minutes to drive from Heraklion. Stop the car in park place of taverna "Limni" (GPS 35.140230,24.910555).
There is 4 routes: red, green, brouwn, blue. I took the picture of map - there is written everything.
We did the red route to St. john church and oak forest with 7 ant 10 years old boys in 4 hours: 3 up and 1 down. We went when the gorge was dry and I can not imagine how you can do this route after big rain.
Only of this doubt and of some places, that is a bit dangerous I give 4 of 5 stars.
At the end it was very taste fresh trout in Limni taverna and THE BEST JOGURT WITH HONEY!

What a great day out! Beware, the route is very uneven and there are several points with wooden ladders and ropes etc where you have to pull yourself up. As others have said, it takes about 2 hours to get to the end and then about another hour to get back. Take plenty of water, we took 1.5l each which was just right. Trainers or walking boots are advisable. My wife however only had her sandals on! We made it in one piece though. During the route along the gorge, look out for the spray painted dots on the rocks. They start off light green, then dark green and then black. There IS a lake at the end. When you get to the tunnel type bridge and the little pond, you need to go up the steep dusty path to your left with the steel fence and over the unmade road. Then straight down the other side, slightly to your left. Don't miss out on the lake as it's about 3 mins from here. There seemed to be a crocodile cage on the bank of the lake so keep your eyes peeled! The taverna when you get all the way back to where you started is lovely and very reasonably priced. The location of the gorge shown on trip advisor is incorrect! That's a road in rethymnon town! You need to search for the taverna. It's called taverna drimos and is north east of Spili. You'll find the taverna on Google maps, it's just south of the big lake you can see North East of Spili. Enjoy!

This is a lovely gorge , short enough to make it a nice day trip with even kids. It gets narrow at times and slippery though and from what I hear worse as the weather becomes more rainy. I recommend the short circle for inexperienced climbers and the long one that ends to the open lakes with return for more experienced mountaineers. The in between, is to take the route from the church to the lake and ask for a taxi or private vehicle to pick you up and take you back where you started. At the start there is a nice taverna called Drimos and if you return there you can enjoy a great meal and drinks. The owners of the taverna can accommodate your transfer back if you decide to only take the one way down tot he lakes. That is what we did. The gorge and the views are rewarding all along and it is well maintained and clean. There are some areas where you have to be very careful because it is very slipper and my walking sticks came handy. also appropriate shoe is required. The riverbed is dry currently but I can only imagine in the spring. I would be back in the spring with different equipment. Loved it.

We did it. Two adults and two children's 7 and 9. It was changing, but we did it, great adventure. Take your time, don't hurry, but get ready to get wet. Make sure you have good shoes, some places are slippery. Top of gorge is bit extreme.

Bonjour,

Written 25 February 2018
Арендуйте машину, это не так дорого. На общественном транспорте не получится все посмотреть. Только прибрежные города.

Hello, please could you let me know the address for St Antony Gorge. I am trying to plan a trip and need the address for the driver.
Many thanks,
Selina

Sorry but I don't know the exactly adress.
It's very easy to found it and the better road depend on your stay house in Crete. It goes out on the AMARI DAM RESERVOIR that you find on the map Google also.
Coming from Rethimon you drive with the lake on your right and follow the sign to PATSOS you find on the left yhe sign to Agios Antonios where you have to go and the road end near the taverna. About 100 meters before on the left there is the entrance of the gorge

HI,
i would like to ask a question, I am visiting Rhetymnon in May, travelling alone. I would like to hike in St Anthony Gorge but I am wondering how far is it from my hotel (Gortyna) and if there any companies arranging trips to get there.
Thank you in advance,
Eva
