We went to this site courtesy of our private guide.

Access to the Monastery was via a steep. narrow and poorly conditioned road.
.
Magnificent, but not that isolated a site because it obviously appealed to the locals who were having a picnic lunch at the time we arrived.

The complex, built and added to between the 10th and 13th centuries, still retains the major church building, still used at present.

A local, singing the Lord's Prayer inside the church, on our behalf, was one of those unexpected highlights of a tour when you visit other countries.
Her intention in doing so was to provide us with, although a small church, an appreciation of the acoustics of the church.

In one word - Unforgettable.

The monastic complex of Marmashen is located on a shelf with apple orchards overlooking the left bank of the Akhurian River, 15 km north of Gyumri in Shirak province. The monastic complex is composed of four churches of various dimensions , one of which – a circular church has recently been discovered with a jamatun and a chapel which are nearly in ruins.

Great place if you are in Gyumri. Road a little poor to get there, but nice for a picnic by the lake.

Marmashen Monastery is a 10th-century Armenian monastic complex consisting of five churches near the village of Marmashen in the Shirak Province of Armenia. The buildings at Marmashen are very similar in style to those of Khtzkonk Monastery.

Interesting setting of an old monastery. One could easily picnic there, as there are tables, bbq grills available.
