We went to this monastery to see the ancient praying rooms carved within the limestone. Rusenski Lom river made this canyon and the monks settled here and made these magnificent carvings. The landscape is very beautiful and the monastery is close to Ruse city. It is an excellent place to get out of the everyday rush and find your inner... More

Our Croisi Danube River cruise arranged the excursion to the monastery. The original natural caves were enlarged to provide living, working, and praying spaces for the monks. At the base of the cliffs a new orthodox church is being built and decorated. We were able to watch the artisans paint icons. It will be a beautiful church when finished.

Near to city Ruse, only 10 km. Its in a very beautiful nature. Nice restaurant Zmeeva chuka in typical style. The only in the region shkembe chorba kind of bulgarian soup.

This small but beautiful monastery sits at thw bottom of a cliff with small chapels carved up in the cliff face. The steps up are steep and narrow - and very hot in August - but the cool of the chapel is worth the effort.

A beautiful site situated close to Rusenski Lom river. Those rooms carved in stone and the sculptures are amazing. As a fact, the entry is free for romanians, because of the help they received in the past. Close there was a bulgarian selling old objects, nice to see this. A good place to spent at least an hour.

Very interesting place. Quite remote. A map is useful. No food and bed around. Not very easy access. Bad roads.

We've never seen anything resembling this monastery before. It's location, carved into rock walls is awesome. I believe it was initially constructed in the 1300's. Much of the monastery was updated and built in the 20th century. This is the only rock monastery in Bulgaria which is still functioning. Be prepared to hike up a narrow stairway to visit. Nearby... I feel bad rating a monastery as average, but the nearby Archangel Michael on the other side of Ivanovo , is a magic location on beautiful nature trails. Michael's has better preserved frescoes and a very helpful curator. Whereas St Demitri has a new church, you can watch the fresco being painted , the UN paid for visitor centre gathers... More

I have been in Bulgaria a few times now and have been in many churches. This place is a highlight amongst them. Carved into the cliff face outside the village of Basarbovo is an ancient religious site. A side note for those who pay attention, the stone here is relatively soft and was obviously under the ocean at one time.... More

From the 20 min. with car from the center of Ruse. The monastery has two churches in the rock /notice that you must climb stairs to see them/ but even you do not to see them the monastery yard is very cozy and peaceful.
