This monastary is by far the best of the big 4 painted monastaries. Do not miss it. Make sure you also go to the small museum it has amazing artifacts including a 500 year codex in immaculate shape. This is a beautiful holy place

It is incredible how a 500 year old church can still have the original paintings on the outer wall in such great condition, nice that it is not so crowded a shame that so many people dont come here.

The fortified church’s massive, whitewashed walls and steep grey roofs gives the place a feeling of great grandeur and is one of the largest of the painted monasteries in the area. Its frescoes – painted in 1596 by two brothers – offset brilliant reds and blues with an undercoat of emerald green. The setting the foot of surrounding hills, carpeted with firs and lush pastures is very picturesque and by virtue of its location is more popular with visitors.
There is parking nearby. 10 leu entrance per person in line with other similar buildings.

Built in the late 1500 - by the Movila family - after the reign of King Stephen - but in the style that was established during the great king's reign. Got its paintings during the reign of king Petru Rares - during his reign the majority of the monasteries churches received the now world wide famous exterior paintings.
Most impressive painting is on the northern side - but almost altogether faded - hence no photo - "the ladder of virtues" with angels separating the righteous from the sinners ... the Haven and Hell allegory.
Also here are the tombs of Ieremia and Simion Movila - one was King of Moldavia for a few years and his brother was put on the throne of Wallachia for some time after the violent demise of King Michael "the Brave" in 1601.
There is also a museum in the monastery courtyard - dedicate to the Movila family - but it is forbidden to take pictures inside the museum. So no pics attached.
The Sucevita monastery is impressive and even that the northern wall is the 1 exposed to the elements it is still in better shape than the other monasteries I've visited. Once again pictures can't be taken inside of the church only on the outside.
Once again an very interesting place that is slowly but surely degrading so I urge you to visit while the paintings are not totally faded into oblivion.

A fortress church with a really thick wall surrounding it. The wall paintings both inside and outside are impressive with the colour green being more prominent than other church painting we had seen. The church is very high so the acoustics are really good. We were lucky enough to here the pure voices of the Nuns singing as a service was in progress while we visited.

We took an overnight train from Bucharest and pre arranged a private transport from a tour agency to pick us at the train station early in the morning, all the way, just to see this beautiful monastery on 1st October 2019. Sadly it was under restoration and half of the building was covered. Well, at least is half and not the whole building, the wall with the angels are still available. The place was very serene and nice court yard. It should be beautiful when the restoration is done. Giving the rate average because we did not get to see all, probably will be excellent when fully restore
