- Dirk WAlexandra Headland, Australia10,119 contributionsHittite CapitalThis site has been settled for 8,000 years, but 3,500 years ago the Hittites made it their capital. It is easy to spend the best part of a day wandering all over it, there's so much to see ! Only the ruins of stone buildings are left and these would have been temples and government structures ; ordinary citizens would have lived in clay & timber houses and they are long gone. Being such a large site, it is best visited by car and accompanied by a guide. You will stop at different locations to visit gates, tunnel and great temple. The best view, overlooking the whole city, is from the acropolis on the high ridge, known as Great Fortress. Near the entrance there is a small shop, where local artisans sell reproductions of Hittite reliefs, carved in soapstone.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 November 2023
- Atis BKharagpur, India1,175 contributionsOne of the little known civilizations unfolded. We arrived at this archaeological and UNESCO heritage site in one afternoon. Our guide ( though not fluent in English but made us understand the history of this place very well. We were astonished hearing the details of this civilization. Though it was raining and cold yet we saw whatever our tour guide shows. We were lucky that we could take some good memorable photographs also.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 27 December 2023
- LIN M16 contributionsImmerse yourself in the Hittite capitalWe visited Hattusa yesterday (February 11, 2024). Since we stayed in Boğazkale both nights before and after, we had enough time. We spent four hours walking around the entire ruins. Hattusa is built on a hillside, and the highest elevation of the ruins (~1300 m) is about 200 m higher than the entrance, so physical effort is needed for walking tours. Walking on the ruins, you can observe every detail of the ruins up close and imagine what happened here more than 3,000 years ago.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 February 2024

The Hittites made it their capital. It’s an archaeological site and they are still doing excavations. We were were very fortunate to have a guide who still does the excavation for over 30 years who explained to us the different sites and discoveries. We walked around but beware very oven terrain with some big rocks..Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 April 2024

You need either a guide or a good guide book to find places to look at, it's over a wide area. Highlights include the King's, Sphinx and Lion Gates, the Rock Temple and the Great Temple comlpex where there's a mysterious glassy green stone.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 May 2024

There is a pyramid inspired from egyptians. Amazing gates reminded me the transformers-artival on earth😊 they must have come across from these gates.

Hattusha used to be the capital of the Hittite Empire, in the late Bronze Age, one of the main competitors to the ancient Egypt. Not much is left, unfortunately, but whatever is left is enough to make you realize that you are not looking at the ruins of a fortress but an entire, huge city, where archeological work is still going on and will continue to do so for decades to come... No other tourists at the time of our visit, which allowed us to take our time and imagine how it might have looked like at the peak of its glory. The most interesting and the most significant place to see are the Lion Gate, the Sphinx Gate, the Yazilikaya sanctuary and the Green Stone.

Visited Hattuşa by end of August 2020, we realised we were almost alone as visitors in the area and seemed whole Hattuşa belonged to both of us. We saw very few local tourists and a group of foreign tourists in the area - remind us that we are in the era of global pandemic …
The best way to explore Hattuşa / the capital of Hititte Empire in late bronze age for us was to walk from the entrance to the top of the hill. It took 3.5 hours with stops in interesting spots such as Lion Gate, Sphinx Gate, ruins of Great Temple, etc. We saw the archeologists' work has been re-started in Hattuşa and it made our visit more interesting. By August 2020 the weather was nice (around 30 celcius during the midday) though it was very essential to bring bottle of water and hat. Boğazkale and Hattuşa are walkable areas and it is very pleasant to see around.

You can only take taxi from Sungurlu or Yozgat to Hattusa. Current taxi cost from Sungurlu bus station is about 10 lira/km. The first 7 km = 100 lira.
I paid 330 lira for 1 way, try to ask your hotel whether they have shuttle car service or not, the price can be cheaper.

The capital city of the Hittites during the Late Bronze Age. It was destroyed around 1200BC during the Bronze Age Collapse. The site is in ruins, but the remains of multiple gates can be seen, as well as a reconstructed section of the walls and the palace complex and the main temple of Teshub. The site is quite large and takes quite some time to walk around. There is a road that allows cars to drive around to the main points of the site, which is useful if time is a factor.
To reach the site, you can take a bus from Ankara to Sungurlu and get a taxi from Sungurlu to Hattusa. Public transport in Hattusa is rather sketchy, so generally, the same taxi back is best. Also be sure to book a return ticket from Sungurlu, giving plenty of time to see the site, as public transport from here to Ankara is a little hit and miss.

A very large site. You can drive along the ruins for a 6.5km. Lots to see castle ruins, sphinx, temple, tombs, etc. If you’re interested in the history, recommend you visit the place with a guide.

Where do you suggest flying into to visit Hattusa? Ankara airport or Merzifon? Also how long does it take to see these two sites? Is it better to stay there or stay in a major city in the area and travel to Hattusa in morning and leave at night?
Written 29 December 2016
The distance would be more or less the same but Ankara would be better i would say, You can stay in Ankara the night and rent a car to the sites its better that way as the sites are in a very remote area with no other ways to access them, i stayed in Corum and took a car to the sites, a half a day is good enough and there are a couple of museums as well in that vicinity which are worht a visit so i would say go in the morning and leave around evening would be a good plan.
Safe travels..

Hey, it's possible to have a bus from Ankara ti Sungurul as suggested. The other possibility is to go by bus from Ankara to Corum. ca. 4 hours. You can stay there, it's a nice town, specially for the archaeological museum full of findings from the area (Hüseyindede and Alaça). From Corum you can fin a bus to Hattusha or organize a taxi. Corum is also well known as the Turkish Capital of chock pea!
Enjoy!
