Nearly 200 years old, the fortress played an important strategic role in the ongoing conflicts between Russia and the Ottomans - note how close it is to the Turkish border. Even today there is a Russian Military base adjacent to the fortress.
Build as a circular structure in black stone, it make for interesting photos from the outside ; some noteworthy details such as bullet holes.
It is now in private ownership and completely renovated inside to serve as a function center or concert hall. Hardly a tourist attraction . . .

We walked around the outside. You could see the bullet holes and marks in the outside of the fortress. lovely panoramic view of the city. with amazing views of Gyumri. you get a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside and of the town of Gyumri. . It has a wonderful round view. It is made of black tuff (local volcanic stone). It has now been totally refurbished. It is used as a concert hall. There is an enormous stage in the middle, The statue of Mother Armenia is very near.

This has been restored with private money and turned into an amazing concert hall - you wouldn't know from the outside. It's historical features have been kept in the main and it has great views over Gyumi and the surrounding countryside.

nothing much to see here. The inside is a music hall / stage or something bizarre. the view from one of the sides looks down over Gyumri. A minivan parking lot seems to have come up just beside the monument! Quite bizarre

We were here in September 2019 and had driven to visit the fortress and the nearby Mother Armenia monument. We had parked between the two and there was a gateway to the fortress - a car was coming out, so we asked the security guard if we could visit and he just waved us in.

As others have said, the fortress is being renovated, so we just walked around the outside. You could see the bullet holes and marks in the outside of the fortress. We had a quick look in through the door. It looks as though they used to use it for concerts etc.

Highlight for me was the statue in the Square of Europe outside. Obviously Brexit had already happened there by September 2019 as the UK wasn't on the globe of the world.

There is a lot of history there. It is not yet completely prepared for visitors in terms of provision of information, but the view and the history behind makes it one of the must see places while in Gyumri.
