Standing tall and proud in the heart of Ganja, Azerbaijan, the Shah Abbas Mosque is not just a religious landmark, but a captivating portal to the city's rich history and architectural heritage. Built in 1606, this majestic edifice, also known as the Juma Mosque, has witnessed centuries of prayers, celebrations, and transformations, weaving itself into the very fabric of Ganja's soul.
Look closely at the minarets and you'll notice they're not identical. One, slightly shorter than the other, bears the scars of a 1735 earthquake, a stark reminder of the mosque's resilience.

Lovely mosque with shebeke windows which are definitely worth stopping for. I didn't go inside as I wasn't sure about the rules and there was noone else there, but I peeked in the doors. It's set in a nice square with shade on one side and a fountain on the other.

It is an ordinary mosque with all its decorations from 1600s. Located at the center of the town nearby to Javadkhan street and City Hall. From here you can visit Bottle house and City Museum which are a few minutes away.

Located in the city centre next to the main Ganja government building and Ganja mall. The 16th century mosque which was built during the Safavid dynasty is a functioning mosque, therefore visitors may have to be appropriately dressed and visit during non prayer timing.

If you think that Shah Abbas Mosque looks quite small, you will be surprised how many men stream out of it after a Friday‘s prayers. I could watch that one evening. Of course it had not been possible for non-Muslims to enter the mosque while the believers were praying. Everybody had to wait outside so that I could have a closer look at everything.
The Mosque lies in Ganja city hall square. In the daytime a lot of people sit in the shadow of the huge trees there or they simply go for a walk. At night the square is lit, and so is the Mosque. Its two minarets rise up high. The Mosque has got shebeke stained glass windows and other ornaments. On the whole it is not too ornate, but it is special. Its interior is plain or rather: humble. In this building functionality and beauty unite to create a substructure for religion. In any case you should not only visit the Mosque in the daytime. The atmosphere was much better at night.
