I would not recommend any one to come here with group travel, because it would not be flexible. Rent a car or private driver. The trip take about 3 hours from Baku. Sitting down as you enjoy the scenery would heal you from all your stress. Be sure to bring your down jacket and gloves. When I visited it at 14th September, the temperature was 1-4 degree celsius.

The village is worth visiting but the best thing is the road with its stunning mountain views. Take an early minibus from Baku ( at 9 or earlier) to Quba and a taxi from there. The taxi was 60 manat and the bus 8 turn and return. If you arrive at Quba later than 1 p.m. Stay at a hotel and start early next morning.

An ancient Caucasian village going back to the Caucasian Albanian period. It is located high up in the mountains of Quba Rayon, Azerbaijan.
It takes several hours to get there in small cars because the buses are not able to ride in the very difficult roads.
To visit such a place is needed much time and willing to walk also in the village itself.
It is not for elderly people.

Firstly you should be informed that the Khinalig village is not the highest village in Azerbaijan. Selibur (Yergi Kek) and Elik are the highest villages (2370 m above sea level) which both are situated in Gusar district in the slope of the Shahdag plateau. The people of all these villages are lezgi by ethnicity.
Khinalig (2200 m) is the one of the most remote mountain villages in this part of the world. Xinaliq’s origins go all the way back to the Caucasian Albanian period, some 2000 years ago, and even before that, this is indeed one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world, with a history spanning over 5,000 years. The houses are made of river stone and the roofs are flat so that roofs of the houses below often serve as terraces and walkway for the houses above. There is no concrete or any other materials, besides some metal sheets, arrived just a few years ago in 2006, when the road was completed. All around it’s full of walls made of tiles of dried cow dung and straw. They serve as fuel to warm in the cold winter.

One of most visited places of Quba is KHINALIQ (Xinaliq) 5000 years old settlement,
i met a city guide and he took me to several places and one of them was Khinaliq ...Very nice and interesting place ,historical, very hard life style ,,peole still fire manure in their stove to heat the house .The have a museum of history of this people and village. whatsp I advice to contact with a guide,,because none of peole speak english,,,the words that they now only money ,yes ,no, my name is,how are you.?..and nothing to talk about history and customs,,you will just be pleased only by nature,,but some of them speak a little russian.. good luck to all future Tourists

One of the most beautiful places that I personally saw. Unique people and landscapes around. To get there you will need to hire local Lada.

Then this is a must. If weather is good I suggest not to use time of the museum of little interest but spend time with the locals and in the nature.

The SOAMoHAaEK is an ethnographic reserve protected by the governments with a unique ancient language spoken lots of archaeological sites and caves around and a spectacular view once you get there as long as the fog doesn’t roll in as it is prone to do. The road to Khinalig is atrocious so make sure you are in a 4X4, have spare tires and lots of time to get there and back. It is remote but we thought it was worth the journey.
