Without a doubt, the most impressive building in Khujand. I'm not sure if it's magnificently preserved or magnificently restored - probably a combination of both. Anyway, it's huge thick sloping walls, tapering as you move up from a think base, are quite superb. It reminds me a bit of the fort/citadel at Bukhara in Uzbekistan.
There's a decent museum to the side but even if you don't go in, it's such an impressive structure and well worth a look.

I was told that the fortress is a modern recreation of the original fortress in the same spot. It now houses a museum giving the history of Khujand and the people of this area of Tajikistan. The outside is impressive, and looks brand new (because it is). The inside is nicely furnished and well laid out. I had an English speaking guide with me, so it made the visit much more interesting, since many exhibits are not labeled in English.
As with most such ethnic museums sponsored by the State, it was pretty one-sided. There is a large section dedicated to the greatness of the current president. But this, too, can be interesting to better understand the people and world they live in.
It is worth the visit.

The Tajiks are trying to restore this fortress. You´ll see a lot of half-employed persons lounging about. The views are decent, but there isn´t much to see. You can walk around for an hour max.

Not worth the hefty entry ticket. There is nothing much to see inside. Enjoy the fortifications from outside.
Better spend your money at the - Historical Museum of Khujand which is within the fort walls but has a different entry.

Essentially like the Ark of Bukhara - an empty shell of a building that is overly kitschy and not worth the entry ticket . The palace is very sterile and nothing worth seeing inside or outside from . Not worth your time to visit.

There are two museums and access to the ramparts.
I paid 20 somoni for one of the museums and the ramparts. The museum is all in Russian/Tajik, some interesting photos and a model though.
Ramparts give you no view worth climbing or paying for, better off admiring the modern recreation from outside as well as Alexander's old fort.
There is a second museum on the corner of the newly build tower that I didn't go in, might be better!
Surrounding park is lovely at night

This was an interesting central asian fortress to visit. It is a good example of the fortifications in the area.

The centre of Khujand has two small museums. This one, and the Khujand historical museum. This one is a waste of time.
The reconstruction of the fort walls is very clumsy. It was a mud-brick fort and the reconstruction is just modern brick. There is also a small, dusty museum with just a few exhibits and no information in English.

This is definitely a very cool place to visit. It is very well designed, and taking care of. Lots of historical stuff there, and well worth stopping by.

We visited the Khujand Fortress during our time in the city last summer. It’s another recreated-renovated-reconstructed fortress in Tajikistan which is fine as sometimes when things are left and forgotten for years they tend to break down. Nothing to really marvel at with this one though, pretty standard, if some of the original was still on view it might be a bit more of a draw, the museum is another interesting point as it is a bit choppy and seems to be a stroke for the president. Take a picture of the exterior and then go find something more interesting to look at in the city.
