Panjshanbe Market is cleaner inside that what you would expect looking from the outside square. It is inside a large hall, it is well organised with the whole ground floor dedicated to food. I picked up a few small bottles of Afghan saffron at a bargain price. The upper gallery has small stalls with cosmetics, electronics and even Rolex watches . . .

Manage to visit early morning when the market was at its busiest. Lots of activity outside with battery powered cars for the kids and boxing machines for the youth. The actual market was huge, with loads of alleys leading off it. Noisy, colourful and with an abundance of aromas, it was quite captivating.

It is a typical central Asian market selling food items and other products . The only difference is that the produce in This market are exceptionally very reasonable. A kg of cherries or apricot or plum cost US$1.50 . They are very juicy and sweet . Good for a 20-30 minute visit .

This is quite a large market where you can of course find all kinds of food. But also, there are sewing shops, clothing vendors, and just about anything anyone needs. For a tourist, it is fun to see how people shop and what they eat.

We really enjoyed a visit to Panchanbe Market in Khujand, a bona-fide local experience with all the clamour, energy, smells, and sensory overload that you'd expect of a central Asian Market.
You can pretty much get anything here. My advice is to go up the stairs to see the place from the landings. It's amazing to see all the hustle and bustle from above.
Outside between the Mosque and the Market is absolute chaos! Mind yourself in the traffic but the whole place is a brilliant experience!

Best way to meet the locals and learn about their lives. It's a traditional bazaar selling a wide variety of things: local bread, clothing, daily necessities, vegetables, meat, etc. You name it...it's interesting.

This part of Khujand, let's call it the commercial district, is one of the most interesting in town, combining everything from Islamic tombs to Soviet-era war monuments. It is also one of the best parts of town for people and/or pigeon-watching.
The Panjshanbe Market is a sprawling market from the 1960s with a pair of elaborate portals and gilded statues. Inside, it is also interesting, with slender columns and buzzing market stalls. Whether you want to shop or merely get some Central Asian buzz, it is a decent diversion.

Across the river (and a mile or so in) from our hotel was the Panjshanbe Market/Bazaar. Rows upon rows of fruits, veggies, meat, breads (yum!!) and all sorts of things you may or may not need. Definitely where the locals shop too as the pricing is low and everyone likes a bargain. There is a bit of room for bartering but don’t try going too low or they will yell angrily at you (we apologized from that faux pas and made amends). Fun spot.

This is definitely not a touristy market, but IMHO a market all tourists to the city should visit. It is vibrant, and colorful and teaming with activity. I find markets to be a great place to get a taste (pun intended) of the lives of the local people. You have access to the people and how they interact with each other in a simple, daily situation. As with many markets, it is divided into separate sections (nuts and grains, breads, produce, etc.). Within those sections, vendors each sell the same items attentively displayed in nice piles. So, with all this competition for the same products, how do the locals decide from whom to buy? I would have expected more vocal solicitations (“Fresh bananas, get your fresh bananas here!” Our bananas are ripe for eating today!”) But it seems that customers have their favorite vendors already, and don’t shop around.
For very little money, you can taste bites of many different foods. A very enjoyable activity.
