A heads up to those who may want to do this as a day trip. There are three cab companies in the city. The day I arrived i called all three. One went to voice mail the other two said they had no cab’s. Uber had no cars available.I would have walked but the weather was not good for walking.
I will be back and try again, but will try to pre arrange a cab or Uber.

This place is a solemn piece of American real estate, bought at great price during the final year of WW1. You can visit not just the cemetery, but the battlefield above and on the hill, which has been preserved since 1918. This area is the closest the German Army came to Paris in 1918, and the US Marines were hurried in to stop them. Three weeks later, the Germans were finally ejected from the woods.
Across the street in the little town of Belleau is an excellent little museum dedicated to the US Marine involvement here. Down the road is a German cemetery with a nasty little detail; you can see the graves of Jewish-German soldiers which were removed after the area was re-occupied during 1940 and purposefully exhumed (later replaced).
This is an easy day trip from Paris and well worth it, along with the monument overlooking the small city of Chateau-Thierry (free excellent museum there as well).

Lovely place but such a shame that the visitors site is following American guidance of COVID not French guidance and is shut. Even though no one was around. There is no signs and no one around to tell you about the place therefore you have no idea the significance of some of the statues or places, no one was ther apart from the noisy leaf blower.

The American Aisne-Marne Cemetery was one of the many places we visited during our 2019 Battlefield Tour of the Champagne Region. The view over the cemetery from the guardian's house is most impressive. Looking at the tombstone one realizes how young the majority of the soldiers who gave their life for our freedom were. At the end of our visit we were welcomed by the superintendant, Hubert Caloud, formerly a US Marine and now in charge of watching over this beautiful place. He was most kind to give us some extra information on the cemetery and the monument at the back of it and entertained us with the story of his career as a Marine.

It is fitting to combine the visit to this cemetery with a visit to Croix Rouge Farm, scene of a major battle of the Alabama Regiment (42nd Rainbow Division) in July 1918. Croix Rouge Farm is at a distance of only 11 km (6 miles).

The cemetery and the monument are an appropriate tribute to the soldiers who gave their lifes for the Liberation of France. The lay-out of the cemetery and the interior of the tower are remarkable.

Having visited other American war cemeteries, the ultimate sacrifices of the young men always has such an impact. To read the individual name, and home town personalizes the dreadful loss to a family.
Viewed through the lens of history, will human beings learn any lessons ?

Closes at 5pm so plan accordingly. Small reception building with bathrooms, but not a visitors center. Visit the visitor Center at the American Monument in Chateau-Theirry for an explanation of where these men died. There is no path from the cemetery into the adjacent Belleau Wood Battlefield, which is curious. You have to go around a fence which separates the two properties. Visit the American monument first, then this cemetery, then tour the Belleau Wood battlefield (which is always open). The small museum and gift shop in the town of Belleau is easy to overlook but is worth a stop; closes at 5pm I think.

Very beautiful and powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the great war. It's a must to walk the woods and go to the Marine museum in Belleau.

We visited as we were staying nearby. The cemetery is separate from the woods. Cemetery is beautifully maintained and is as thought provoking as other war graves. One thing to note is they close at 17.00 so don't leave it too late
