If you're interested ín History and castles, Lezhe Castle is a must-see. We were visiting the Lezhe District for some beach and sun time, and happened to read about this fortress as we were planning our trip. What you'll love best is the high quality of the ruins. Despite being inhabited by the Illyrians, Venetians and Ottomans at various times, this historical site is well-preserved and a lovely side trip when you visit this cultural center of Albania.

If you love old ruins that hint at a grand past, this is your place. We parked at the bottom of the hill and walked up. BIG mistake! Drive up and park in the beautiful new parking lot. It's still a couple of hundred yards to the entrance but nothing compared to the hike we took. On that walk, walk around the wooden bridge. It might not break down, but... Ask for the English brochure at the gate. It has the history and a map with an index. Be sure to go up on to the wall at the far west end for an amazing view of Lezhe and the Adriatic.

One of the stronges castles in Albania during 15th century against Ottoman Empire with Gjergj Kastrioti-Skenderbeg as a leader of resistance. The view from the castle to the valley is very good. Near the castle in Lezha city ia a tomb and museum os Skenderbeg. Its worth to visit.

Beautiful landscapes in top of it, you can clearly see the different periods of times of building it and the changes in the architectures of different ages.

We three British middle aged guys were touring the Balkans for a fortnight in September.
We arrived in Lezhe in the middle of September, staying overnight at The Ambasador Hotel and wandered around the Mausoleum/St Nicholas Cathedral in the late morning. Being off season everything was quite quiet.
We decided to make our way up to the castle above by foot. Following the signs up the big stairs and roads the views just got better and better but it was quite a trek in the sun and heat.
Most of the way up at the base of the castle footings were some steps off the road to some remains of walls made of huge cleanly cut blocks of stone which we explored. I decided to head up an old rough track to the castle above which led me to the base of the castle walls which were also impressive. It did not seem possible to go all the way round anti-clockwise so I went clockwise round the castle to find the main entrance open with a small hut with a bored man in, taking the entrance fees. A sign outside had the opening hours including Sunday. The trek was worth it!
I dropped off a handful of litter which I had collected into the bin by the hut and he thanked me for that. All the way up the road there was litter, far too much for me to litter pick. I only cleaned up around the base of the wall.
I paid the man 100 (70p) for each of us and waited for my friends in the gate, reading the large and informative interpretation panel in English. The wall blocks remains far below turned out to be of very ancient Illyrian origin.
My friends arrived and we all entered the castle to find a fairly empty expanse of hilly terrain with long grass and some ruins surrounded by intact walls.
We split up and explored the castle in detail with only a couple of other tourists and admired the views of the sea and lagoon systems to the North East and the surrounding rivers and valleys behind.
The wild meadows inside were not as rich in wildlife as I thought they should be and was disappointing as we were remote from crops so a bit 'Silent Spring'. I am afraid there was some litter scattered around which I ended up gathering and returning to the single bin by the hut with the man thanking me again and again! Some of the 'litter' was actually a broken floodlight with safety glass embedded in the soil which showed me that the litter clearing is done very rarely. The cistern was particularly littered with more distasteful stuff which children's enquire about after visiting (some tourists get a bit too romantic too romantic in there it seems). From the walls there were beautiful views naturally (if you ignore the litter).
On finally leaving I asked the lonely man about the opening times on display and he said they were not those in operation! He gave me a leaflet with the times on and rewrote them in pen! It seems nobody in town seemed to know the actual times. Times vary between tourists and weather seasons. To be safe it is open until 6, even on a Sunday, although the hotel owner said it closed at 2!
We left the castle and returned to town via the car park and road usual way. By then we needed a drink in the blazing sun and found the terrace bar of The Jolly Hotel very convivial!

It's a beautiful walk up the hill to the castle. Great views over the plateaus and out to eh sea.
The castle is a ruin, but it's worth a look if you find yourself in Lezhe.
