Mu Cang Chai, name of a district of Yen Bai province in the northwest of Vietnam, about 300km from Hanoi is the most beautiful place to see amazing rice terraces in Vietnam from around June to October. Tourists come to Mu Cang Chai should book a private tour with a local travel company in Hanoi. The tour to Mu Cang Chai can be combined with Sapa to make a great trip.

Worth the 6 hour drive from Hanoi. one of the most spectacular landscapes, filled with friendly and welcoming people. A massive contrast to the cities, very few tourists and extremely worth the trip.

Mu Cang Chai district is located in a high region of Yen Bai province, nearly 300 km from Hanoi to the Northwest. From the middle of September, the rice is on the hillside, the field turns bright yellow, attracts thousands of visitors to admire the view of the most beautiful terraced fields in the country.
Located at the foot of the majestic Hoang Lien Son range, Mu Cang Chai terraced fields are a cultural heritage created by local people for generations.
In 2007, terraced fields in 3 communes of La Pan Tan, De Xu Phinh and Che Cu Nha were recognized by the Government as a National Landscape. Not only that, Mu Cang Chai is also in the top 10 most beautiful terraces in the world.
In the last days of September, I and my friends who were passionate about photography soon invited each other to explore and conquer the roads, to enjoy the natural beauty bestowed with the labor of people living in Northwestern mountain.
Each of the terraced fields winding like golden waves in the dazzling sunlight capturing those present.
This is the second time I have come to discover Mu Cang Chai in the ripe rice season, but my feelings have not changed. The beauty of the mountains still gives me great surprises. According to the people, this year the rice was harvested throughout the terraced fields. People of Thai and Mong ethnic groups are also excited and happy in the harvest day.
Sometimes on hillsides and a few plots, interweaving between yellow and green is the brown color of harvested fields. Adorned with the majestic Northwest painting are small sheds on the hillsides. Perhaps, for a man who loves nature, mountains, to witness and enjoy these moments is the luck and happiness in me.
Raspberry hill in La Pan Tan commune is one of the famous destinations in the Mu Cang Chai golden season, attracting tourists to visit. From above, covering the hillside, you still see this place interwoven with shiny green and yellow colors.
The beautiful Mu Cang Chai nature painting is "painted" on 2,200 hectares of magnificent terraced fields which are golden to the heart of anyone visiting here at any time. Back to me the impressive image.

I went along with two others on the 4 day trek to mu cang chai (the trek is through the valley and the mountains) through zonitrip (Nghia was our guide for the entire time) and we had a very good experience with the scenery, food at the home stays, our hosts at the three home stays were very friendly and provided us with very tasty food made from simple ingredients that they grew). We are all vegetarians and I haven't tasted such good fresh food anywhere. The entire experience was a treat to my palette and body.

A revisit to my favourite country site of North Vietnam, Mu Cang Chai (MCC) in October 2018. My planned for the trip is to the have the complete scenic golden terrace fields harvesting season before it is harvested. Last year (2017) I was here in Mid-September, where the terraces rice fields were still not ripe and was in green, hence this year (2018) I planned the visit two weeks later that is in early October hoping to see the golden colour. However, was disappointed as some of the scenic viewpoint in La Pan Tan commune has been harvested and with burned straws some black patches. The harvesting basically depends on the weather, so you can never be a right time to have a complete view of golden colours of La Pan Tan unless you are staying here in the months of September to October. So just planned what is your purposes of the visit and what you want to see, whether it is the start of new crops November to April (brown barren terraces) with Hmong farmers and women in colourful dress and buffaloes ploughing the fields. The seeding and growing season (May and June) with heavy raining and young green of the early growth till late August. Mid-September onwards the green turning to yellowish till early November is the peak of harvesting season. Conclusion anytime is the right time to visit MCC, depends what you like, as the scenery in MCC keep changes throughout the year with different colours. At any different time of the year you will get a different view. Refer my photos of Mui Gia Viewpoint which I took the same spot last three years and have a three differences colours theme.
This revisit I tried a different mode of transport. I pre-booked online a ticket for a minivan which will pick you up from NoiBai Airport, Hanoi and straight to Sapa. I set Hanoi for the return trip from MCC. This way you can save the taxi fare from airport to Hanoi City. Usually there are minivan two trips to Sapa, either morning 7:30am or afternoon at 3:00pm depend on which operators. Some only did one trip per day. It takes around 4 - 5 hours with two pit-stop along the way. This 9 seaters VIP minivan is very comfortable and save. By the time you arrive Sapa it is around 8 – 9:00pm and no more buses to MCC at this hour. Check-in into a hotel or guesthouse near by the Sapa Bus station (Ben Xe Sapa) and look for bus to MCC the next morning. If the hotel reception is not helpful you have to do it yourself by going to the bus station to check it out. If you are taking the local minibus like I did you can wait in front of the bus station (main road frontage). This minibus usually will off load passenger here but did not go into the bus station. I used the local minibus (usually Hyundai beige in colour) from Lao Cai – MCC which will take passenger as well as any cargo from mail and usually vegetable and fruits in poly bags. As usual this minivan will loads any cargo that can go up and distribute along the way until MCC. The journey takes around 6 hours from Sapa to MCC which will take you over the Heaven Pass of Fanxipan Range. Later on the way show the driver or conductor on google map where you want to get off. Go to Cho Nga Ba Kim (if you are staying in La Pan Tan like I did) as I stayed at my usual Homestay “Do Gu Homestay” in Lau San Chay, La Pan Tan. The owner who will pick me with motorbike from Cho Nga Ba Kim market town, 3km from his homestay along Route QL32. This market street is the jump off point to La Pan Tan commune. If the bus is not going to Cho Nga Ba Kim than you have to arrange the local motorbike to take you there or arrange the homestay to pick you from MCC town (23km away) or another option is to rent the motorbike (around USD7/day) to move around which are very common for locals and foreign tourist during their visits to MCC as there are not public transport are rare or none in this rural district.
My return trip to Hanoi, I took the local minibus (Hyundai beige colour) from Cho Nga Ba Kim. You have to inform you homestay owner so that they can inform the bus driver if they have one or they will take you to the main road to wait for the bus to Yen Bai Station. At the station check with the reception for the bus to Hanoi, My Dinh Station. The bus run on the Lau Cai - Hanoi Highway but also stop along the highway to pick and drop passengers as it goes. It take about 3 – 4 hours from Yen Bai to Hanoi depends on the stop and the traffic as it going into the city and the traffic could be heavy at office hours

We spent 3 days to explore Mu Cang Chai, using motorbike from Hanoi, the road is so smooth and not so crazy. Passed Khau Pha Pass, we reached to MCC - north west area in Viet Nam. We picked the harvest time to see and it is absolutely amazing. All terraced paddies fields have been changing to yellow color , it created a gorgeous senses.
There are some landscapes you must see :
La Pan Tan Village, Nam Khat Village and Lim Mong village, don’t forget spend a little time to enjoy in hot stream in Tram Tau community.
Highly recommend.
