You walk between five and six hours from the car park to the crater and back. The first part of the trail looks easy from above, but it is not. You walk all the way over younger or older lava - so you have to watch where you walk to avoid tripping. I'm a very pale person, so I applied lotion twice more on the way and put my jacket over my arms and neck. The crater itself is good to look at but not terribly spectacular. Overall, the path is rather boring because there is little variety. That's how I imagine it when you walk across the moon.

It was a really nice hike till the Dolomieu crater. Try to start the hike early if you want to see the crater, as it gets filled with clouds..
Bring on food & water with you..

Piton de Fournaise is in a remote part of Reunion, so there are no public buses or transport available - but the roads up to the car stop are good, so it would be easy 2 hour driving from Saint-Gilles. Hiking starts at 2200m elevation and then it goes down to 2000m after that it rises to 2600m - track is very firm, no-lose stones and very relaxing walking or running. Track is well marked but there is no progress indication as to how much has been walked or is left to walk.
Do not be afraid of the weather - at the car stop it was raining but once we crossed volcano wall and there inside - it was sunny again.
The landscape is interesting in the first place, but after a while it gets boring - even if this active volcano - do not expect to see much activity and it will look the same as other volcanos in world. On moments, then there are no clouds you can see Piton des Neiges summit.

What a great and special hike up to Piton de la Fournaise. After the breakfast at Gite du Volcan a drove 5 min to the car park to leave my car here. Already at 6:30 the car was pretty full. But still possible to find the space. At the car park you can find rather dirty toilets and small kiosk with some drinks, snacks and fresh pancakes. I started with nice sunrise from the head trail at Pas de Bellecombe, about 5 min walk from the car park, towards Balcon du Dolomieu. Bust after I pass the Formica Leo, the small cone, the weather stated to get worsen, the first high wind and mist, then turning into the rain. My thoughts were not the best but I was still positive that when I reach the top in higher elevation I can sea into the crater even the people going already down were disappointed and could not take a look inside. Just few minutes before I reach the clouds and mist drawn like a curtain. Lucky me. The gaze down into the bottom of the caldera was amazing and rewarding. The trek is easy fall the white dots or better the beaten trail. I did it in peaceful pace with pictures taking in 5 hours. It is about 14 KM. Even I had the good weather during climbing up as I avoided scorching sun take sun lotion and enough water and raincoat in case of rain which I experienced or at least water proof jacket. Be advice that some parts of the trail are basaltic, lava and sharp. Please do not take a dog with you not to injure their paws!!When I went down at about 9:30 the trail started to be quit busy and crowded.

Pictures don't do justice to how beautiful this place is, if the drive up to the place doesn't take your breath away the volcano surely will. It's an easy trek even if you're travelling with young kids, but there's not much in terms of restaurants up there so carry a picnic

For somewhere free, it’s gotta be the main attraction of reunion island. We took 5 hrs 45 mins and didn’t make it to the crater as we turned back after reaching the top (you need to walk around the top of the mountain to the crater) as we were worried About the time & wanting to be back to the carpark before sunset. I think it’s not worth climbing 🧗‍♀️ this mountain ⛰; once you reach the base from Formica Leo, it’s good enough as the main sights are the lava at the base of this mountain. My friend sprained her ankle from the uneven surface at the base. The hike back up the stairs to the carpark is a killer!

Everything is unique, from the panorama of Plan de Sables to the whole caldera that harbor the volcano. Some notations: we reached "the cavern", at very base of the Volcano, before the ascent. The cavern collapsed, so do not search for it anymore. The trip until there is not hard at all, however clouds can arrive quickly with cold and humidity. The landscape is breath-taking.

It is an impressive sight, no doubt and the hike across and up to the crater is an unusual landscape, although hardly unique. Be aware that because of what you are walking across - dried lava and rocks - there is very little level ground so it puts real stress on your knees, and your ankles if you don't have hiking boots. Hiking poles are recommended.
I was slightly underwhelmed by the view into the crater. The view from it was down to clouds - need to be lucky or get there early to avoid this.

We were staying in La Riviere, so quite an early drive up here to try and fit in all of the viewpoints and have a good walk around. Called at Nez de Boeuf on the way up - nice clear view, though in fog on the way back. Quite a bit of info on the geological history scattered around the main viewpoint (Pas de Bellecombe), but otherwise very little. Decided against descending into the caldera since you could see everything from above.

Had a coffee at the Gite du Volcan (and there is coffee and chocolate at the main viewpoint) but otherwise bring sandwiches. The scenery is spectacular so make the most of it and arrive as early as possible.

There really is nowhere else like this place it is difficult to describe other than to say it is like being on another planet but you know you are high up because it has taken a long time of climbing (by car) to get there. The terrain is rugged and has a red hue the whole place just took our breath away.
