It is worth walking the streets of Cividale that evoke all the past that it treasures, mainly of low middle age with mention of some points deserving of the mention of UNESCO. Also the views of the devil's bridge and the river that is a substantial part of the city. It is good to get closer if you visit the region.

Ignore the reviews that say Cividale is not a place for children. If you want the world to cater to your children, go to Disney World. If you want your children to engage with the world -- play in a river, hike outside of town, play futbal in the piazza, learn to appreciate art and history with a 1 hour visit to a museum, be immersed in a new culture - then Cividale is your place.

Beautiful town full of Lombard remains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. About twenty minutes from Udine. The Lombard Temple, the National Archaeological Museum and the Christian Museum are worth a visit.

A wedding favor. Fantastic town, welcoming, well looked after, clean, with many places to visit. Every corner of the town tells something, a beautiful journey into its history and culture. You can perceive and see what the presence of the Byzantines and Lombards left behind. The food is also fantastic; some trattorias tell you about and pamper you, accompanying you on their local culinary journey. Absolutely worth visiting. Divine experience enjoyed to the full and in every moment. Friulians hospitable and helpful.

....x visit Cividale del Friuli well.😔
Such a center with many sites of Lombard origin should be visited calmly and carefully.
So, already planning a return in August, we are content to wander around the village discovering fantastic corners.
See you next time 🤗

Very nice and atmospheric old town. Traces of Longobardo culture everywhere. Beautiful bridge, nice small winding alleys and a lovely central square. Very nice for a day stop.

This beautiful village about 30/40 minutes from Gorizia is very nice to visit, a day possibly in September you will also find initiatives, info az of stay and / or proloco. We on a beautiful Sunday morning strolled through the main street and stopped in the beautiful square to enjoy the aperitif. A visit to the cathedral, some photos .. especially to the famous bridge

Cividale del Friuli is an object lesson in why you should never judge an Italian city by what you can see from a car. I drove through the town on my way from Slovenia to Udine, and got as far as the edges of the old city. It seemed like the usual Friulian city, old and crowded and -- while potentially interesting -- it didn't seem worth a stop. Fortunately, I was spending some time in Udine and took the train out to Cividale on a Saturday (if more Americans spent more time on Italian trains thre realization of how utterly shameful our rail system is might begin to sink in), walked through the ways and found myself in one of those gorgeous, ancient towns that makes Italy such a delight. Cividale has the added bonus of being set above a spectacular little river, with a pleasant waterfall, and has enough sites -- including a lovely monastery and a museum that focuses on Lombard artifacts as well as ancient Roman ones. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts: it's a delightful place to spend an afternoon sightseeing, sipping Prosecco in the cafes, and generally taking in the atmosphere.

From Udine Train Station, buy your train ticket from the little shop selling newspapers and lottery tickets at the train station, not from Trenitalia. I am not sure why this is the case, it just is!
The train journey from Udine took just 20 minutes through farmland and a few small towns.
After making a fumbling start without a map, and getting a little lost, we asked a pleasant lady for directions to Cividale’s landmark bridge and she ever so graciously helped in pretty handy English.
So, back on track, we located, the old city walls, a couple of statues and a town square (with the Duomo of St.Mara Assunta at one end) on our way to the spectacular Devil’s Bridge (Ponte del Diavolo).
The river was pristine – you could see the bottom and lots of large fish which looked like 3lb trout. Photographs from, and around, the Ponte del Diavolo were the stuff of postcards. The rest of the town, particularly the backstreets, was also very photogenic.
There seem to be lots of churches, which curiously seem to have smaller steeples as you look along the river. We stumbled onto a huge old monastery while exploring the back streets then wandered wearily back to Piazza Paolo Diacono where we flopped into a chair at an eatery called L’Elefante for a drink and pleasant mid-day meal before wending our way back to the train station.
Actually it wasn’t much of a wend at all, because we had inadvertently worked our way quite close to the train station in our map-less wandering where a train was waiting to whisk us back to Undine with a minimum of fuss.
Cividale is a nice town, with a lot to see and appreciate, in an understated way, and it clearly is not on the tourist trail. We didn’t see another tourist (maybe one, but he was Italian) and there were no postcards or tacky souvenir shops. It was wonderful. I guess being at the end of the train line does/ doesn’t help, depending on your perspective. It has a spectacular bridge and impressive river – there is nothing like water running through a town to give the place some character.

Great cultural spot and a place to relax with lots of super- friendly B&B's, bars and little shops. It is calm and very welcoming. Only very few kms away from Slovenian border and places to visit like Catelmonte, And those on the seaside- Lignano, Grado. Great public transport communication and really-really friendly locals.
