The agriculture project at Inthanon National Park is worth the trip. We first hiked through the "Cloud Forest" for the first part of the day and finished with a late lunch at the Royal Agriculture Station. The Projects have converted an entire village from poppy fields and the opium trade into an organic farming project complete with restaurant and wonderful food. The grounds are beautiful and the stop here was a perfect ending to a perfect hiking day. A great day trip from Chiang Mai that you shouldn't miss!!

Our daughter and her family live in Thailand so on our occasional visits we try to visit parts of the country we have not seen before. During a trip to Doi Inthanon National Park outside of Chiang Mai we stayed at The Royal Agricultural Station. The station has bungalow style rooms that are quite spacious. Each has a loft with sleeping mats which would be good for older children and well as a lower level with a king-sized bed (in the arrangement we had). One word of caution about the beds - the pillows were very, very hard and too thick. After the first night we discovered that the throw pillows on the chairs were more comfortable! If you drive to this location I would suggest that you bring your own pillow and maybe a fan if you go during one of the hotter seasons. The rooms are not air-conditioned and ours did not have a ceiling fan.
This is a working agricultural facility, growing flowers and vegetables and doing research. The produce used in the restaurant comes from the site. There is a lovely formal garden with ponds, koi, ducks and swans. Our grandchildren had a wonderful time feeding the fish and the birds. You can buy food from the coffee shop for 10 baht. There are 2 waterfalls that you can see from the facility and easy hiking trails that allow you to walk to the falls.
The open-air restaurant served excellent food. The dishes on the menu at lunch and dinner are all Thai but the breakfast does include some American style food (which is nice for those of us who have trouble with the idea of spicy food in the morning). In the morning and evening you might want a sweater at meals since at the elevation of Doi Inthanon it does get cool. It is helpful to speak a little Thai in this area since it appears that there are more Thai tourists here than westerners, but you can get by with English.
You might have to hunt a bit to arrange transportation to this area from Chiang Mai if you do not have a private car but there are guides and tour companies who go to Doi Inthanon. It is well worth the trouble it might take to get there.

It is a good place to do a short walk inside the station. Then try food at the restaurant. It's super Yummy and High Quality. I like Roti with Hunglay curry it is a local dish and also fried mushroom. I like everything I ordered. HaHa

I was there to see the Royal project. We went to see how the villagers grow vegetable. We had a chance to stay at the resort at the station which is surprisingly extremely superb. Compare to the price that we have to pay for the whole house plus breakfast it is excellent value. The house with a cozy decoration and relaxing balcony with the 3 bedrooms, kitchen and complement coffee and tea from the Royal project. I definitely come back to take my days off here.😍😘

We had been to visit this Royal Project on a previous occasion but didn't hesitate to visit a second time as we knew the project would have developed further. We weren't disappointed.
For the purposes of this review, I am not talking about the restaurant which was, in the opinion of all our party, poor.
This project was initiated by the late King Bhumipol a number of years ago in, what appears to have been a very successful attempt, to stop local people deriving their income from growing opium poppies and change to growing vegetables and flowers. The project covers a large area and nearby hillsides are terraced and covered by polytunnels. The gardens are superb with a large variety of plants, shrubs and some magnificent trees all surrounding a small lake complete with black swans.
There is a very interesting fernery with a comprehensive collection of shade loving plants and, in another part of the garden, a wonderful collection of orchids and roses.
Development is on going and the project had certainly changed from a couple of years ago.
There is a fairly large car park, toilets, coffee shop and gift shop. Strolling around this project made for a very enjoyable afternoon.
Highly recommended.

I recommend this place if you enjoy well organized natural place.
Start your trip by reaching Doi Inthanon national park (Thai adult 50 bht, Foreign adult 300 bht, a car 30 bht....sorry i don't remember children and motor bike price)
Drive to Baan Mae Klang Luang, stop for a coffee, then take a local tour guide to enjoy 2-3 hours trekking (400 bht for guide)
It is a really nice route to boost up our life energy.
After trekking, go to Inthanon royal project (20 bht for entrance fee no matter age or nationality we are, this is awesome! ...Hope Thai government learns more how to treat foreign tourists equally)
Enjoy the floral park. Enjoy royal project kitchen, food is tasty and reasonable price)
My suggestion is to avoid weekend trip.
No need to buy too much to carry. It is the same price with other royal project shops in town, except some products you might not find in other shops)

loved the food. good quality and reasonably priced. all the ingredients come from the royal project itself.
had the duck salad amongst others. it was cooked using coffee beans, unique and tasted lovely.
the restaurant gets pretty full, and doesn't always take bookings. we had to wait for about 30mins for a table to become available. and they are only open between certain time.
there is an entrance fee for the royal project, but if you are just visiting the restaurant, inform them at the entrance and they will let you in for free.

Better go there during end of the year or beginning of the year. in March to May will be very hot and humidity. Raining season (June to October) the plants will be more green but it won't be easy to go out.

It is a pleasure to go through different gardens, a lot of them showing exotic orchids (at least for us). We also find quite rewarding the view of the lakes. In one of them you could observe some black swans. Curious.
