Not all that far out of Chiang Mai is Lamphun where this magnificent temple is situated. We were particularly lucky as our visit coincided with the Lloy Krathong festival so the grounds of the temple were full of thousands of lanterns. It really was a breath taking display.
It was also very busy with people buying and hanging the lanterns and , as most temples, there were many food stalls and stalls selling Buddhist mementos.
Away from the various Buddhist festivals, it will be much quieter and also, therefore, much easier to park. We allowed about an hour and a half there which was ample time to see most of the temple buildings and grounds.
Well worth visiting.

The temple is in Lamphun city. Ample parking in front of the entrance to the temple, spacious, umbrellas, you can walk right into the temple. On the right hand side is the Phra Chao Thong Thip Temple where the main Buddha image is housed in a Lanna Thai-style glass house. On the left hand side is a coffee shop. Hariphunchai Coffee that sells OTOP products Lamphun has dried ripe mangoes. Dried longan stuffed with strawberries Lamphun's own roasted and ground coffee Later it was a Dhamma hall. and the temple Behind it is a glittering brass-colored Phra That. Surrounded by a Buddha temple Phra Chao Tanjai Temple Phrachao Panton Temple And there is also a replica of the Buddha's footprint. Behind there is the Nadu Mueang Sangha building. with a city pillar and an image of Phra Rahu To pay homage to the black item to ward off suffering, disease, and the image of Queen Chamadevi. To me this temple is the best place in Lamphun. When I went to this temple, there were just few people, it was quiet and beautiful. It is a must-see in Lamphun. I recommand the nice road 106 from Chiang Mai to Lamphun (compared to highway).

While visiting Chiang Mai we decided to have an adventure, so we took an antiquated local bus to the town of Lamphun. The town doesn't have much to recommend it except for its beautiful temple. You can walk around the grounds, chat with a monk, and clang the giant gong. We also had ice cream in a place along the river. No one speaks English here, so figuring out how to get the bus back out of town was a bit tricky (the "tourist office" was manned by what appeared to be a custodian who spoke no English and had no bus info), but we figured it out eventually. We had fun, altho we wouldn't really recommend Lamphun as worth a special trip.

Here in the heart of the city is where Lord Buddha’s relics are housed in the gold pagoda. The temple is usually used for official religious ceremonies.

I'm not really in to temples, but i go along to keep my better half happy. This place I enjoyed. It is a large compound, and less crowded than the temples I have visited in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. I enjoyed the small museum, even though the information was in Thai only. It's a great place to spend an hour or so

This is a fabulous temple, on par with Doi Suthep near Chiang Mai. It’s very worth a half day trip if you are in Chiang Mai. The temple complex is also quite a bit more peaceful and serene than you are likely to find in more tourist heavy areas and I even saw a number of people practicing walking meditation. You can visit in a tour or hire a driver. There are some English language explanations throughout the temple to provide a bit of background. The national museum is also next door and I wanted to visit but unfortunately was closed due to a holiday when I was there. The museum is generally open Wednesday through sundays but yes also closed on holidays.

I travelled from Chiang Mai to Lamphun on the local bus, departing by the river behind the night markets. Very cheap way to get there, this temple is very old and large with a massive gold stupa and across the road there is a museum with artefacts from the 12 th and 13th century, a very interesting day.
