A great place to take a break when travelling along the Mae Hong Son Loop. The real market town has an incredibly real morning market with even a "halal" section catering to the muslim minority community which has been a part of this area for centuries. There's also an amazing night food market held thrice weekly along the main street which is simply an asian foodie's heaven. A must visit for this area....

The entire point of Mae Sariang is that it has not fallen prey to mass tourism. The town has its own Thai/Burmese/hill tribe personality and has not succumbed to Disney World status. There is more than enough natural beauty and places of interest, but the visitor must do a bit of hard work to experience them. Why I only found one single sign offering massage and had to look hard for that one. Tip: do not ride the minivan all the way to the terminal, only in order to pay someone on a motorbike to carry you back 5 kms. To town. Get off at the first junction at the south side entrance to town. It is much shorter - and cheaper.

Great waterfall

Approx 20km on the 108 Mae Sariang to Chiang Mi you come to a field of sunflowers go past about 50m and on the left side there is a huge green sign board (with flags) turn left here and follow the road. I give these directions because there is no English sign showing the exact turn off point.
The waterfall is brill, there are concrete steps and barriers all the way down to the fall with the pool, which is 3 or 4 levels down. There is one more fall after that but it doesn't have concrete steps.
From the top to the bottom it took me about 20 minutes but I went quick cos it was getting late and there were loads of mosquitos. So to really enjoy the place give a good hour plus. All the trees are tagged with names too which is nice, there are some really tall ones.
There are picnic tables at the top too.
One bit of the last road is gravel so a bit tricky on a scooter.
I would definatly recommend this waterfall.

Just a stop on the Mae Hong Song loop

Mae Sariang was the first stop on my Mae Hong Song loop motorbike tour. It has nice boutique hotels specially for bikers. But I would not know what else it has to offer. I tried to find some busy places in the evening. However, the only location I find was kind of a restaurant/bar with a mid class live band and about 5 guest (including me). Hence, it's OK to stay overnight, but nothing to see there.

Great town

Visited this town on way between Mae Hong Son and Mae Sot......
Managed to rent a decent bike for 700 baht a day... Keeway 200 Superlight which was way better than any other rental available.
Some great roads to ride on and with the speed of the bike we managed some good kilometres per day... some great places to visit in the area.
Overall we had a great 4 days in this town, met some great people and are some great food in local cafes.
If I was in the area again I would easily stop off for another few days.

Good for landscapes and authentic trekking

Some hundred miles from Chiang Mai. The city itself and the river has some charm but you should definitely get around through a tour or by yourself with a motorbike. It worth it.

ATTRACTIONS TO SEE IN MAE SARIANG

MAESAWABBIU WATERFALL, a spectacular waterfall just 18 kilometres out of town, with 7 layers to walk down. Fantastic
MAE LLAN LONG LUANG HOT SPRINGS - beautiful scenery, boil some eggs in the natural springs
TAM BORAN BUDDHA CAVE. Princess recently visited. A magnificent beautifully renovated cave just 10 ks on the way to MaeLaNoi. Dozens of small and huge Buddha statutes from Gold to Jade in perfect condition, unbelievable sight.
KAEW KOMOL CAVE (found in 3 places Australia, China and MaeLaNoi, 28ks away. Crystal calcite int he cavern crystallized on the cave walls.
MAE SARIANG LAKE: a peaceful beautiful addition to the town, walk or relax around the lake.
HUA HUM VILLAGE: Mae LaNoi, Coffee Plantation (sample the coffee) & Sheep Farm watch as they sheer the sheep and make clothes. Fabulous shop there
SALAWEEN RIVER, 46ks on the border of Burma (Myanmar) and Thailand. Take a long boat south or north, and visit the remote village of Baan Tha Ta Fung on their white beach called Haad Taen Gaew which means 'A Platform of Crystal'. Next to the river is SALAWEEN NATIONAL PARK, 721sqm and home to a wide array of flora & fauna and animals, antelopes, deer, bears, palm civets & gibbons.
MAE SAM LAEB: 46ks west away from the town. One of the most beautiful tourist attractions. It's a small village on the banks of the Salawin River inside the Thai border. You can see many Burmese people, plus many simple bamboo cottages built near the banks. Snow from Tibet goes into the river, making the Salawin River beautiful. The white mist in winter make the village look dream like. There are 15 rooms for tourist to stay in
TREKKING IN REMOTE HILL-TRIBE VILLAGES: The pristine forest make it popular with hardy trekkers looking for a more authentic trek. 1-3 days are offered. Overnight is spent in remote hill tribe villages sleeping in bamboo huts that see very little tourists.
SALAWEEN LOOM NAAM KONG NATIONAL PARK: popular attraction on the Big Teak Trail adventure, the giant teak trees so stout that it takes either men linking hands to encircle its trunk. Rich in flora and fauna.
BUDDHA HILL: Huge Golden Buddha on the hill overlooking Mae Sariang. Take a scooter and visit - spectacular views at the top looking down over the valley
FOUR REVERED WAT'S: Wat Prathat Chom chaeng, Wat Pratat Chom Tang, Wat Pratat Chom Kitti, Wat Pratat Chom Mon, each temple is believed to have Buddha's relic in the top part of the pagoda. Well worth a visit.
MARKETS; Wed night at the top end of town (mainly food): Friday late afternoon next to the Police Station, Sunday late afternoon in the main part of town. Saturday morning market on the Mae Hong Son main road is HUGE, next to 711. They sell everything you can think of, well worth a visit. They pack up around 11am.

Do not spend a lot of time here, go around - nice nature.

There was not much to do in Mae Sariang itself. There are several pagodas and one museum; the latter has recently burnt. Several pubs and night markets. But look around - it is very nice and interesting.

Lovely little village

From Yummy noodles, cycling through the back lanes, local live band at Maesariang Bar, this little place makes a perfect stop over.
