We took a ride for almost 1hour 30 minutes to Parangtritis Beach from the downtown of Yogyakarta, perhaps it was the nearest one outside the city. The beach was famous for her black sand, but the big waves signified that it was not suitable to swim in such rough sea. Local visitors crowded everywhere, even lots of garbage washed up on the beach, Horse ride non stop at the beach i feel sorry for the horse i can't help :(.. Just spend less 30 minutes the decide to leave this place early..

This beach could be better if visitors put their rubbish in the bin. We are here for the view because swimming is prohibited due to dangerous rip current. Tried to ride on the ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) but the vendor rejected us because we are foreigners not locals. Apparently a foreigner is being stereotyped as careless driver (???)

We stayed in an hotel in Jogya with my family and decided to go there for a different afternoon.
You pay to enter Parangtritis road and you pay heavy parking fee’s after ehehehe
The place is average, nice beach indeed, but one cannot swim there for various local reasons.
Nice friendly peoples around, not much good food..
Anyway we had good time there and it beats the busy city life.

Parangtritis is a highly polluted, and overcrowded, dirty grey beach about 30k south of the city of Yogyakarta, that is really not worth visiting.

A number of rivers that flow through the Yogya province emerge along the beach. These rivers are highly polluted, with raw sewerage, or septic overflows, direct rubbish dumping and road drainage all running into the rivers. Basically the contaminants of the four million or so people who live between the beach and the volcano all end up here....

In addition to that the beach is black volcanic sand and completely unsheltered, not like the small sheltered white limestone sand beaches that you find further to the East in Gunung Kidul.

The beach faces straight on to the great southern ocean hence the surf here is rough, and unpredictable, with undertows, rips and odd currents. Very few locals can swim and there are no lifesavers on the beach of anything goes wrong. In fact so many locals and foreigners have drowned here that swimming is banned, though a few crazy foreigners still do. I'm quite a strong swimmer, but swimming here is not for the faint hearted, and I personally wouldn't take the risk as rips and swells could mean having to swim a long way sideways in rough surf before being able to get back in.
Because the beach faces onto such a vast ocean, any storm that develops a thousand kilometres away, days prior, could result in a freak wave that drags the unsuspecting out to sea, supporting the local mythical belief that the queen of the south drags out to sea, anyone wearing anything green. Anyone who goes missing surely wa wearing grren underwear or had something green in their pocket...

The beach holds spiritual significance to Yogya people as the sacred home of the Queen of the Sea, Ratu Kidul, so trips there can be long and painful as roads are overcorwded with endless tourist busses of local tourists, they too then bring vast amounts of rubbish and create vast amounts of sewerage... all in all it would rate close to zero on my recommended places to visit list for foreigners in Indonesia, unless to see one of the spiritual events that happen here, but even those are so so crowded that it would remain low on my list.
If you do like the wild black beach atmospehere I suggest heading further east to Pantai Baru, or even beyond to near where the new International Airport is planned.

Parangtritis beach is just another local beach that is poorly maintained. Nothing much to see or do here as the waves are too strong. The beach looks nicer from the pic, like a reflecting mirror because of the charcoal color sand. The good point is, it is just 1 hour from Yogyakarta city center and you can get here with 'Uber Trip'.

Very busy at the entrance of the beach with lots of shops and warungs. Shocking to see painted living small crabs for selling.
There is the possibity to rent any kind of vehicle, from trikes to horse carriage. Nice beach, if you leave the crowd at the entrance point behind. It was quite dirty where all the locals are if you go further away along the beach it's much cleaner. But too bad that most Indonesian people are not aware what they are doing with theire trash to nature. If you are proud of your country, keep it clean!
It's very windy there, but that was refreshing.
This beach is not really for swimming, but nice for a long walk.

This each is the nearest from the city of Yogyakarta, but sure not the best.
have wide beach with a black sand, complete with the fiercing wave, make this beach a little bit of scary. According to the SAR, it's a little bit of dangerous to swim on this beach cause of it strong rip curl...
so if you're on familly vacation, please watch over your member of party

I was there on Christmas Eve. The beach was full of people. They were gathered to spend time swimming or just chilling at the shop sipping coconut water. I saw some children riding the ATV quad bike while others sat on the horse carriage (which I do not recommend) since horses are meant to run free instead of being made to run on sand. The beach was located near a hilltop.

I initially wanted to para-sail but my friend and I couldn't find the shop. So we did the body language that mimics it. A guy with a ATV suddenly came by and fetched us to a place. We then sat on a lorry filled with people. It was quite scary as we thought something fishy is going on. But later I learnt that it is actually paragliding that we will do. It only cost $50 for 15-20 minutes. So I decided to summon up my courage and paraglide with the person. Prior to that, we signed the indemnity form before paragliding.

It was a magnificent experience as I watched sunset on a paraglide. My friend took a picture of me. I was quite scared but after all was done, It was truly unforgettable. Highly recommended to visit the area!

The beach is crowded by local people who even doesnt go to the water.
There is too many sellers but they are not annoying so it is ok.
You can rent an atv for 100k/20min, but you cannot accelerate so it is not so funny.
I am against the horses exploitation in indonesia but you can also ride one if you want.

The landscape is pretty and maybe if you go after liburan (holidays in indo) it is less crowded and you can enjoy a pretty good beach.

I didnt have time.to visit really around but it seems there is a.lot of pretty area to go.

You cam.also find fair prices for food around the beach which is really ready for tourism.

My problem is that it is not so easy to access except using local buses and they always try to cheat especially with bule so unless to really enjoy you come back to yogja with frustration.

The normal price should be around 20k to go for 1h30.

Was there for the sunset. Unfortunately the day was too cloudy. So we had BBQ corn and rented the beach mat for 25,000 rupiah for 2 hours. There're also ATV & horse carriages rides on the beach.
