This temple is located at, 9 KMs from Kumbakonam in Mayiladuthurai route. Presiding deity is Mahalingaswamy with Godess Bruhat Sundara Gujaambal. Temple built by Cholas and is believed, around 2000 years old.
According to legend, the site of the temple at Thiruvidaimarudur has been used for over 2,000 years and is associated with the Pandya king Varaguna Pandian. The temple contains inscriptions of the Hoysala kings and some Vijaya Nagara grants too.
A visit & prayer at this temple is believed to help get rid of the “Brahma Hatti Dosha” One of the powerful Shiva Temples of Southern India. This is a huge temple with big temple tank & white Nandi inside the temple premises.

The Shiv Linga here is simply eye catching because of the way the Abhishek is done, it looks simply Majestic. In case anyone is interested, this temple is also famous for pooja for Brahma Hatya dosh nivaran, for which you need to reach a little early from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM. The pooja itself is a half hour procedure. There are plenty of lodges and eateries around the temple.

This large temple has good peaceful ambiance. Mahalingeswarar is the main deity and Ambal temple is on the left. Evening deeparadhanai accompanied with nadaswaram, thavil and bells with the temple hall acoustics is truly magical!!
My rating for this temple is for the overall experience and NOT the temple by itself which is wonderful by itself.
Sign board says this temple is maintained by adeenam, neverthless maintenance is sub par at best, with weeds growing in paved and unpaved areas, dark mandapams with dull or no lights, walls, gopurams and vimanas are unmaintained with molds growing on them (decide for yourself, see pics), etc., Simply shows lack of pride and apathy of management and devotees towards otherwise a wonderful temple.
This temple is well connected by public transportation on Mayiladuthurai - Kumbakonam highway about 8 kms from Kumbakonam. This is a must visit temple along with Thirubhuvanam temple and Vittal Rakhumai temple which are all few of each other. This temple takes about an hour to make it a memorable visit.

Historically significant, one of the temple unanimously suggested by astrologers for important rituals. Mahalingaswamy bestows with grace in clearing all the hurdles in life. This temple has a huge area, will take upto 2 hours to finish worshipping all shrines. Architectural aesthetics, an auspicious place to spend time with family. Especially on Full moon day, many devotees would pay visits and perform rituals.

Here Lord Siva is in Swambu form- Lingamurthy, that too Maha Lingam – Big in size Linga murthy. Goddess is Perumulaiammai/ Pirugugujambal and it is one of sakthi peetam, with Maha Meru chakra installed .
There will be no limit, if we want to describe this temple in details, it may run to a book size. So, let us see the important features and specialties of this great temple, which is few centuries old.
This is also called Panchlinga sthalam, Viswanathar temple at the East street,Rishipuruiswarar in West street, Athmanatheswarar at South street,Chokkanathar temple at North street and Mahalingeswarar at the center. Another significant feature is- it is also center of saptha vigraga muthees. They are :Chidambaran Natarajar temple,Vella Vinayagar Temple at Tiruvalanchuzi near Swamimalai, Swamimalai Murgan temple,Tirucheingal Chandikeswarar,Sattanatha Bhairavar at Sirkali,Suryanar Koil(imp navagraha sthalam) near Kumbakonam and Dakshinamoorthy Temple at Alangudi and Tiruvavaduthurai Nandhi temple.
Moogambigai shrine is unique in this temple – there are only 2 shrines in India for Goddess Moogambigai, one at Kollur In Karnataka (near Mangalore) and other is in Tiruvidaimaruthur Mahalingeswarar Temple. Mother Moogambigai blesses Her devotees with abundant love and care. Must visit and pray in this Moogambigai shrine here.
Many theerthams are available and there is separate mini temple, inside this gigantic Mahalingeswarar temple, for Lord Murugan.
There are about 32 theerthams (holy water) like Kaarunayaamirtha Theertham and Kavirippoosa Theertham. For the 27 stars, there are 27 lingams. Each devotees can offer prayer and pooja ,as per their birthstar.
3 pragarams running into many kms – outer big pragaram (precincts) is called Aswametha Pragaram. If you circum-went this one, it is equivalent to performing Aswametha Yagam. We could not do this, due to my wife’s poor health. Another interesting pragaram is the second one – Pranava pragaram. Here if you call loudly “Siva”, it echoes back. Similarly, if you clap once you can hear back the clap echo.
The Nandhi here is not made of stone, as we can see in all temples, but made of clay, chunnam, etc.(suthai Nandhi in tamil), a big one with almost 6 ft height. Devotees are advised to enter one entrance and come out through other entrance on Goddess shrine. Legend says that Brahmagathi ( an eveil force,we can say) is waiting at the entrance side and so devotees can come out through other side. This is also unique in this temple.
We can go on saying , but time was limited for us and so we cut short our visit (with 3 hours spent) and came back with full of satisfaction and blessings.

Visited this wonderful temple third time . Really great experience ,every time . The lingam darasanas of Lord Mahalingeswarar swami is out of the world . This is a shaktipeeth as well with superb darsana of Goddess Parvati as well . Tamil nadu had treasure trove of big , historically significant temples but somehow not well publicised and not well marketed .

This temple is one of the Panchakrosha Sthalas. This temple is more than 2000 years old and one of the oldest temples in India. Go through main entrance and tour around the temple. It is fantastic temple and no words to explain.
Please ensure you are not spoiling the temple during your visit like throwing garbage, oil lighting in not specified areas etc…

Hi , om nama sivaya!
As you have known, you may do parigaram for mandhi those. This is a famous Thiruvidaimaruthur Sri Mahalingaeshwar siva temple situated near Kumbakonam town.
From Dharmapuri if you want to travel by train pl take Mysore- Myladuthurai , get down at Kumbakonam. From Kumbakonam frequent buses are available once in five minutes and can reach within 15 to20 minutes time. If you want to travel by bus, you have to come to kumbakonam from Dharmapuri via Salem - Perambalur-Ariyalur . Buses are available frequently. To visit all the shrines of the temple you may need minimum two hours time.
Pl plan accordingly.boarding and lodging station KUMBAKONAM.
Have a nice trip.
Nattrunaiyavadhu namasivayamae!
