This building complex, founded in the 12th century and dedicated to Shiva, exudes something that simply switches off the hustle and bustle of the city center.
A mighty gopuram leads you to a very large area where you can first find yourself again. There aren't the masses of people, vehicles and other stress factors that make Indian cities so problematic. It's easy to find a place to sit and enjoy and breathe in this atmosphere. The mighty sacred buildings, which have a magnificent effect here, are very helpful. You simply feel protected and free from constraints. The subtle music in the background completes the idyll. You are in an oasis of peace where you can just let yourself go.
In short: a recreation area in the center of a city.

This is again one of the large temples of kumbakonam nearby other tourist places. visit to this temple gives the holy experience but nothing special as such to see in this temple.
The total time spent year could be approximately 30 mins. The premises is not having toilets Drinking water needs to be carried on your own. No Cloak Room. The person needs to be in traditional Indian attire to go inside.

Fairly large temple right in Kumbakonam city center to the East of Potramarai kulam . Great spiritual ambiance and reasonably well maintained. Try visiting this temple within town early in the morning when priests and local devotees wake up Amman with songs from Tamil poetry who then goes and wakes up Lord Shiva or in the evening around sun set. Easily walkable from other temples like Adhi Kumbeshwarar, Someswarar, and Sarangapani temples that are in city center. Needs bright lights and better ventilation to improve devotee experience.

The temple is situated around 8 kms away from Kumbakonam.Though the main deity is Shiva as Nageshwara, the serpent God ,Rahu, one of the planets in Hindu zodiac, has usurped the position of main deity.Believers from all over the country come here to get rid of Rahu Dosham .Milk abhishekam is performed during Rahu Kalam every day and devotees flock here to have a glimpse of it. Apart from this it is a typical Tamil Nadu Temple with huge gopurams spacious halls etc.

nachiyar kovil, uppliappan kovil and thirunageswaram temple , all the three temples are within 2 kms from each other on the smae kumbakonam thiruvarur road. we reached nachiar koil first, about 9 kms from kumbakonam on a sunday evening around 4 15 pm. its a non festival day , so there's not much crowd. the travelled 2 kms towards kumbakonam for uppliappan koil. here also not much crowd. then reached thirunageswaram temple at about 520 pm. we wanted to perform raghu abhishekem , which starts at 530. we paid 250 Rs each for three of us and as we were first, we were seated in the first row..
As the rituals were about to begin, some local temple guy brought 5 persons and seated them in our front!!.. may be the money works inside the temple too!!
The abhishekam itself was done very systematically and was over in 20 minutes..
worth visiting 3 temples under 2 hours!!

Nageswaran temple otherwise known as "Koothandavar kovil".Chola dynasty constructed this temple during 12 th century. This temple stands as a great marvel of Chola's architechcture, building technology. The design and orientation are structured in such a way that it allows the sun rays inside the temple only during the month of Chithirai. The Karuvarai of Nageswaran temple has similarity with that of Sarangapani temple,as it is made in the form of a chariot. The temple consists of two Gopurams in the eastern and western directions. ( Temple phone : 0435 – 2430386 )

Well visited the temple in July 2018 to do milk abisegam for Lord rahu. The temple staff are not helpful. The priests are more concerned about money than the poojas and actually dare to ask u to put amount of rupees before they give u the prasadam. Temple lack clean toilet facilities and bathing facilities. Poor hygiene. Sad to see a great temple in this condition. Hope the Tamil Nadu govt do something because tourist visit this temple.

The pontiff at The Tirunageswar temple told us that the shrine is known to have existed for over Rahu temple 1800 yrs old.
. Milk abhisekam is done during Rahu kalam and the milk is known to turn blue as the diety is in snake avatar ( form) Powerful sound of nadaswaram. We couldn't stay till rahu kalam as it was between 3 - 4:30 pm and we were here in the morning.
Naganath or Nageswar is One of the 12 jyotirlingams present all over the country.
Ambal temple has all 3 devis : parvathi, lakshmi and saraswati
The toilets are totally unusable and when we approached the guest house attached to the temple The manager there every rudely threw us out . Come what may be wouldn't allow us to use the toilet. One of the entrances was completely water logged due to incessant rain. Only hope funds are used honestly used to improve infrastructure in this ancient and historic temple.

Kumbakonam is conveniently located to see Navagrahakshetras which are just within a radius of twenty kms. Tirunageswaram is nearly seven kms away from Kumbakonam towards the east. This temple is very spacious with four entrances and towers. Many people visit this temple to get rid of bad effects of Rahu graham which may create ill-health, marital discord, santhana dosha, kalasarpadosha etc. At this shrine Rahu , the Lord of Serpents, worshipped Lord Shiva and was freed from the curse of a sage. So Lord Shiva in this place is called Naganathar. Other celestial serpent deities like Adi Sesha, Takshaka and Karkotaka also worshipped the Lord. Adi Sesha did penance under the senbaga trees (champak trees) and created a temple tank in the southern entrance. Lord Surya took bath here and regained former brightness. Hence this thirtham is called Surya Theertham. There is a hundred pillared hall on four sides of the temple tank. Just near Naganathar’s shrine, a separate shrine for His consort , Girikuchamaba is seen. Here the Goddess is seen along with Lakshmi and Saraswathi symbolizing three types of Shakti, Gnana shakti, Kriya Shakti and Ichcha shakti (will power). Lord Indra worshipped this Goddess with Punugu (a type of spice) for forty five days to absolve himself from the curse given by the sage Gauthama. Great emperors like Nala and Pandavas visited this temple and worshipped Lord Naganathar and Lord Rahu. Holy sages like Parashara, Gautama and Bharadhwaja also came here and worshipped the Lord. In the second prakara the shrine of Rahu with his consorts, Nagavalli and Nagakanni is seen in the southwestern corner of the temple. Rahu is seen with a human face blessing devotees with one hand and holding the other hand on his hip. Generally in other Rahu Ksetras Rahu is seen with a serpent head and with the body of a human being. The special feature of this temple is that milk poured on this shrine during Rahu Kalam turns blue while flowing over the idol.
This temple was built by Aditya Chola in 10th century. Later rulers extended and renovated some parts of the temple. The statue of Vinyagar in the eastern entrance was installed by Sadasiva Brahmendra with a Ganapathi Yantra. The path leading to second prakara has a hall decorated with pillars with yalis. Govinda Dikshitar constructed this hall. Sambumali, the king, constructed the temple tank, Surya Pushkarini and worshipped Ambal to free himself from the curse of the sage, Kaalangiri. The roof and other renovation works were done by Arimalazham Annamalai Chettiar. Many sculptures of divinities like Nandikeswar, Somaskanda murti , Nataraja and Bhairava are seen on the on the pillars in the mandapa. The sculptures of Saiva saints like Sambandar,Sundarar, and Manikkavasagar are also beautifully sculpted on the panels of this mandapa.
This temple is one of the 276 holy places mentioned in Saiva Tevaram. Nayanar saints like Jnana Sambandar and Appar praised Lord Naganathar in their devotional hymns. Near this temple, there are many worthseeing temples like Uppiliappan temple (2kms from here0 and Pratyangiradevi temple (2 kms from here). This very large temple with many mandapams and a very big temple tank with pillared halls on four sides is a wonderful work of Chola kings indeed.
