Kampaheswarar temple (aka Sarabeswarar Temple) in Thirubhuvanam is at a few kms from Kumbakonam on Mayiladuthurai road. This is an 800 year old temple built in early 13th century by Kulotunga III who is supposedly the last great Chola king . It is modeled after the 3 other Chola temple Gems the Brihadishwara temple in Tanjore, Gangaikondacholapuram and Darasuram Airavateeswara. All these 4 great temples have many commonalities between them. One thing common among them is they all have tall vimanas (tall towers over the sanctum or Garbha Griha) compared to entrance towers (gopurams). Needless to say this temple is smaller than Tanjore, Gangaikondacholapuram and Darasuram temples but architecturally as beautiful and serene as the other 3. This temple is designed with thick single wall for the sanctum to bear the load of the vimana hence it lacks the prathikshana padhai (circumambulation path) inside the sanctum. This temple is less popular than others in the area beautiful neverthless. That fact makes it a great place to hang around peacefully without the maddening crowds of temple hoppers and marvel at the architecture of this 800 year masterpiece!

This temple is situated about 8km from Kumakonam to mayiladuthurai.
The main deity is Kambahareswarar. There is a separate sannidhi for SARABHESWARAR which is very famous here.As per Purana God NARASHIMHA after killing Hiranya has become very ferocious & uncontrollable even by Devas.
Sivaperuman has taken the form of SARABHA to subdue Narasimha.
The devotees firmly believe that for removing obstacles in marriage, for begetting a child, for recovery from debts, for winning legal battles, for neutralizing the effects of black magic etc., worshipping Lord Sarabeswara is the best remedy.

This form comprises the forms of an animal, human and bird – the face of a yali, human body and the form of a bird. The form of Narasimha consisted of a human body and the face of a lion. Kaali and Durga became the wings of Saraba. Lord Sarabeswara lifted Narasimha to space, drew out the asura blood (Hiranyan’s) and pacified him. He took him to space because even if a drop of asura blood fell on the earth, it would lead to the emergence of many asuras. So, Lord Sarabeswara took Narasimha above the gravitational sphere to prevent his blood falling on earth. The form of Sarabeswara comprises four Gods – Shiva, Kaali, Durga and Vishnu.
The sculpture & architecture is interesting to see.

This unique temple of Sarabeswarar is located ten kms away from Kumbakonam on Myladuthurai and Kumbakonam route. This temple is said to have been constructed by Kulothunga Chola III 1176 to mark his conquests of North Indian Kingdoms. The main deity of this temple is Kambahareswarar , a swayambhu Lingam with great powers. A king called Varaguna Pandian was afflicted with shaking fits caused due to his act of killing an innocent Brahmin. He was cured of this complaint and relieved of Brahmahatya dosha when he worshipped the presiding Lord here. The tower of this temple is very tall (160 feet) built in typical Dravidian style seen in the Big Temple of Tanjavur and Airaveteswara of Darasuram and that of Gangaikondacholapuram temple. Shiva's Consort, Dharmasamvardhini is seen in a separate temple. Outside this temple is seen the temple of Sarabeswarar with a seven-foot high idol of sarabeswara in the form of a Sarabha, a fusion of man. lion and eagle. He has four arms wielding an axe,a deer, flame and a serpent. He looks very ferocious putting his foot on Lord Narasimha who lies at his feet with folded hands.Lord Shiva took the form of Sarabha to control the destructive rage of Lord Narasimha who was not able to control his anger after slaying Hiranyakasipu. A metal idol of Sarabhswarar is seen near the idol. We do not find a separate temple for Sarabheswarar in other temples anywhere else.In this temple saraba Homam is done every day. Many devotees worship Lord Sarabeswarar to get rid of harmful effects of black magic, legal problems, marriage problems and to get progeny. They do eleven pradakshinams and light eleven lamps for eleven weeks to get their desires fulfilled. The form of Sarabeswarar is a fusion of four gods-- Shiva, Durga, Kaali and Vishnu. We find a huge crowd during the thirteenth day of full moon or new moon.Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Ashtami are also good for performing Sarabeswara Pooja. Brahmotsavam is celebrated for 18 days during Panguni (March-April) and Saraba Utsav is done on Sunday. Just like Mahatyangira Temple of Ayyavadi, this temple is also unique as we do not find any specific temple for this very powerful and gracious Avatar of Shiva, Lord Sarabeswarar. So do not miss the opportunity of visiting these two temples when you visit Kumbakonam.

This is one of the oldest and a bog temple. A must to visit in Kumbakonam. Lord Siva and Parvathy are the main deities here. Foreigners will be delighted to see the architecture of the temple.

The temple includes shrines of Shiva as Kampaheswarar (Shiva Lingam) and Sarabeswara. It is the fourth Chola temple which (like the 3 living Chola temples at Thajavur, Gangaikondacholapuram and Darasuram), has a vimana taller than the gopuram and has a similar structure: the entire temple enclosed within a high wall, with corridors running along; but unlike those this one seems not to be as well maintained, and clearly shows later changes, both in the form of additional masonry work as well as paint on the temple sculptures! Also, the water level in the well is far below and the well is full of rubbish unlike the one in Darasuram
No lawn, but some a bit of open space is there around the temple.
