All the four temples of Kumbakonam Town i.e The adikumbeswarar temple, the Sarangapani Temple , The Chakrapani Temple and the Ramaswamy Koil are situated very near one another and one day is more than enough to cover all the four temples. The Chakrapani Temple temple is not so grand compared to the other temples but having seen the others your mission will be incomplete if you don't see this temple. The pillars of the temple and its construction which have stood the test of time for centuries is what makes you stand enchanted for eternity.

Chakrapani Swamy Temple, Kumbakonam (Baskara (Sun) Shethram)

Deity : Chakrapani Swamy
About : The temple is one of the 5 important temples of Lord Vishnu of Mahamaham.
Timing : 6 AM to 12 PM, 4 PM to 8:30 PM.
Parking : Lot of parking area - free parking available.
Route : The temple is located 2 kms from Mahamaham tank.
History : The temple has nice temple architecture. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Vishnu as Lord Chakrapani. There is a bronze statue of Maratha King Serfoji II who is seen worshipping the lord. According to Hindu Mythology, the Sri Chakra, was aimed to kill the demon king Jalandasura. The divine Chakra on killing the asura, settled on the banks of River Cauvery. Lord Brahma established the Sri Chakra in this place and began offering worship to it. Since the Chakra glowed thousand times brighter than the Sun, the Sun god became jealous of the Sri Chakra. Sun increased his brightness to overpower Chakra. The divine Sri Chakra drew the sun’s brightness to its self to teach him a lesson. Then the sun God who realised his mistake, surrendered to the Chakrathazhwar. It is said that Sri Chakrapani Swamy (Lord Vishnu) came out of the Shri Chakra and gave his divine Dharsan to the Surya bhagvan.

Chakrapani temple is a nice temple tucked away in one corner of Kumbakonam. It is probably close to the cauvery river banks but not sure as there is no water in the cauvery these days. We visited this place as a part of our temple tour. The main deity is Vishnu in the form of Sudarshan Chakra.

This temple is one of the important Vaishnavite temples in Kumbakonam . All Alwars sang about the glory of this temple in their hymns. This temple was built by Nayak kings between 13th and 16th centuries. In 1620 Govinda Dikshitar, Diwan of Nayak kings, who constructed Rama Swamy Temple also built a corridor between Sarangapani Temple and the older Chakrapani Temple. Unlike in other Vishnu temples here the lord is worshipped with Bilwa leaves which are generally used in Saiva temples. The wheat porridge is the special naivedyam (holy offering) offered to Lord. In India rarely do we find a temple for Chakraththalwar or Vishnu’s important weapon, Sudarshana Chakra. Lord Himself manifested as Sudarshan to kill Jalandhara in the Underworld and emerged from there at the Chakra Thirtham with great effulgence. Lord Brahma worshipped Chakra Raja and installed him in this temple. The Sun God feeling envious tried to outshine Chakra Raja but Lord Vishnu took away all his brightness and thus humbled his pride. The Sun God worshipped Chakra Raja and asked pardon for his arrogant attitude. Lord Sudarshana restored the brilliance of Sun God and obliged his request of naming the place after him as Bhaskara Kshetra. Hence devotees who worship Sudarshana and go round the temple will be liberated from bad effects of planetary influences. This temple is constructed at different levels and so one has to climb many steps to see various shrines. In the main sanctum Lord Sudarshana is seen with eight arms wielding different weapons encircled within a discus or chakra. One can find a third eye on his brow which indicates divine knowledge. One can also see utsava vigrahas beside the Moola Virat or Main presiding deity. Just to the north of this main sanctum there is a separate shrine for his consort Vijaya Valli. In the outer Prakara there are shrines for Vinayagar, Panchmukha Anjaneayavar, and Vijaya Valli. The temple tank located on the northern side of this temple is called Amritha Pushkarini. While coming out of sanctum one finds the bronze statue of Sarfoji II with folded hands. The king worshipped the Lord and got rid of his illness. Though this temple looks smaller when compared with others we find beautiful sculptures and carved pillars in the temple mandapam,

A very powerful temple situated near the main market area, it is dedicated to Lord Chakrathaalvar, a form of Lord Vishnu. it is believed that circumambulating this temple 12 times a day for 48 days can fulfill any wish. This temple has two entrances that are used in turn based on the sun's position in Uttarayan or Dakshinayan.

A very good temple to visit located in the heart of the temple town of Kumbakonam; the temple requires one to climb up and down some steps - though not very large in number, but they are quite steep and is not comfortable for those who are weak in the knees.
