The Suryanar Temple is situated at the village of Suryanarkoil in the Thanjavur district. Located at the banks of river Cauvery is one of the specialities of the temple. This temple is 15 km to the east of Kumbakonam.
There are 12+ theerthams in the temple. All nine planets have separate sanctums (sannadhis) in the temple.
Inside the main inner sanctum there is idol of Lord Surya and outside the sanctum resides lord Brihaspathy facing Lord Surya.
Suggest to take a guide to get better aware of temple significance and rituals. You may offer monetary benefits as low as 100/- for the guide.
Offering to lord can be purchased from inside the main temple. There are many vendors selling flowers one the path leading to the temple who may overcharge..

This temple is near to Kumbakonam/Mayiladuthurai.(About 20 KM)
This is one of NAVAGRAGHA temples for sun god. There is seperate sannidhanams for other Navagragas.I had been to this temple on aSunday &it is also Ratha sabthami day(17/2/20013)This is an aspecious day on which the Sun god changes its direction. There is a different procedure to worship the Navagragas here.
First you have to pray to god PRANANATHESWARER &MANGALAMBIGAI
at Thirumangalakudi 1KM away from Suryanar temple. At Suryanar temple you have to take anticlockwise direction after offering yr prayers to sun god to worship other Navagrahas. Then you have to take clockwise direction to complete the prayer. Elaborate details are given in websites.
Bus services are available from Aduthurai bus stand & it is 2 KM away.Since bus services are limitted,it will be more comfortable to travel in car & you can visit Sukran temple near by(KANJANOORE)

Lord Surya is the main deity, all other Navagraha will be around the Temple. If you want to do Navagraha Pooja in temple, then this is the Temple you should go. Lord Sarapeshwarar nearby, only 10 to 15 min away, dont miss.

People come to these Navagraha temples when they have few doshas or problems in their kundli/horoscope beacause of which they are suffering a bad time.
So, we will be in a state to do anything(or shall i say spend any amount?) to ward off those doshas. The Purohits there encash on it.
Me and my spouse were pocketed out more than 700 INR in name of poojas and no receipts given even when asked. Apart from that we should tip them and mind you it starts with minimum 100 INR. So, people with less money cannot get grace of Sun God, because the so called mediators to God (Purohits) wont barge less than 100?
The God not just as idol but in their divinity exists there but the treatment meted out to Gods feels bad. The idol is just used as source for them to earn money by these Purohits.
Anyway, we splurged money on them, bacause of which we could get good darshan and pooja.

One can stay at Kumbakonam or Tanjavur to visit this temple. Its 15Kms from Kumbakonam Town and ~50 kms from Tanjavur. We had stayed at Tanjavur and visited the temples around, one was the Suriyanar Koil.
Here, the main deity is Sun God; there are other 8 grahas too close to the main temple. A must visit for all who believe.
Surrounding Kumbakonam there are temples dedicated to each of the Grahas, the most famous being the Shaneeswaran temple at Tirunallar.
We had stopped at Quality Inn Viha for lunch and the manager of the hotel was kind enough to give us a map of all temples around, refer the attached image.
The hotel also offers tour packages to these 9 temples, the details of which are also attached

visited this 1500 yrs old temple with family in april 17. the temple has all navagraha deities. and has a wonderful architecture ...lot of shops outside temple who are selling the prasadam as offerings for temple. there are shops inside as well .. so better buy from inside... we bought from outside and the rates were i think more ... ( coconuts tray - rs 240/-, 3xlotus for rs 30/-, diyas pack for rs 20/-, pandit charges rs 200/-, tickets rs 40/- per head, extra pandit who claimed he helped us asked for rs 100/-.
rs 200/- for those pandits in different temples there who will look upto you and seek money. Rs 500/- which ur pandit will force you to pay as food for poor etc etc... ) so pl be wise and carry change @ Rs 10/- and 20/- .. for serious offerings types / religious types.. u may buy the 9 coconut and deepaks for each deity temple .. otherwise carry some flowers etc... in case you hire a pandit then tie up his dakshina in advance and also tell him not to tell any hidden charges later... these guys are very smart and just keep asking money for one or other reason.. there are some tickets @ Rs 40/- per person which needs to be bought too...
overall the temple was very nice.... and a must visit while in kumbakinam... it is said that in case you cant visit all 9 temples there then at least this temple is a must visit because it has all 9 navagraha deities there. take an auto so that you dont waste time in parking and looking for the temples as some of them are in very much interiors...

It was recommended by our Driver to visit this temple as we are short of time to visit all the 9 Navagraha temples individually. My mom and I had a peaceful darshan. It seems there is a procedure to go about the temple. Kindly, ask about it when you are purchasing the Archanai ticket and the staffs will be more than happy to assist you.

We should visit the temple on Sundays but now due to corona all temples are closed in weekends then is there any way to visit it on Sundays
Written 28 September 2021
i think it's from morning 5 till 8 in evening..

Hi
Being the Sun Temple normally Sundays are crowded.
On other days it should take between 30 to 45 mts.
At that temple there also the other 8 grahas. You can get a package deal for the archana's for all the 9 grahas.
