Yes, this beach could be wonderful BUT I find it amazing that anyone can say this beach is lovely and clean when you cannot get away from the rubbish. No matter where you walk along it. Rubbish scattered everywhere, plus piles of it. It's the local dumping ground. Get real, a clean beach is one without rubbish. It locals or Indians in general want to be proud of their beaches (and their country) clear up the rubbish.
We were caught out and booked in KolIam for several days. Unfortunately we couldn't cancel the hotel.
I agree with another reviewer, go to Varlaka....that said there's still rubbish there but nowhere near so much!

Veliyam Sree Subrahmanya Swami Temple is one of the ancient temples in south India. It is situated at Veliyam ,Kottarakkara, Kollam,Kerala,India. Around 13 km from Kottarakkara and 20 km from Kollam. On the Kollam Ayoor Road. The temple is beautified with carvings of the various manifestations of the god and godesses. 'THYPOOYAM' is the major festival of this temple. This is an occasion when the entire area of Veliyam and South Kerala is focused on the temple. The streets are made colourful on the festival days with colourful processions. We visited Kollam beach on the evening of Tuesday, 23 Feb 2016. The month of February is hot in kerela and this day was no different. We chose a hotel close to the beach, so we could walk down the beach.
The beach is relatively smaller when compared to beaches of Mumbai. We were happy to see 5 to 6 life guards on the beach. The life guards were not allowing visitors to go deep in to the water.
Limited eating options were available at the beaches managed by localites. Did not find them tempting enough to even look at the menu or items available.

A great crowd, clean water and a clean beach. The cliff on the beach makes it even better for the view. Sunset was an exquisite experience.

Brown sand littered heavily with paper, plastic and thermocol plates, cups and ice cream containers. There are so many hawkers selling fried foods as well as plastic and paper toys for children. You also get to see many kite vendors. Only thing worth seeing in this place is a look at the evening sky with many colored kites fluttering. The sea has a deep slope at places so crowd collects at those few points where the slope is relatively shallow. Adjacent to the beach is a children's park which is worth visiting.

Visited the fishing Quarter beach mid morning - quiet intimidating (accosted twice, by groups of drunk fishermen) and extremely dirty. great shame but advise not to go there.

Kollam beach is one of the Nice Beaches in Kerala and well maintained By Kollam corporation.
An Evening with family here is great experience, The Children's will love the Park. Small Ice cream shops and Snack bars are all time crowd on holidays.
Festival programs are organized there on Special Holidays. The White sand walk is really great. The main problem on the beach is the Dangerous Waves, waves are unpredictable, so little bit cautious we on the shore. cost Security guards are very active here. Gave salute them for saving lot life's. Not good for bath because of waves, We will get a long view of Tangasseri light house from the beach. Nice wind and good for Kite flying. On Sunday evenings the beach very crowdy. For an evening walk and sit, its an ideal place.

Is there a Boat service form Kollam to Trivandrum?
Written 21 March 2016
The answer given by Mr. Aneesh is very appropriate. Nothing to add to this except that train is the best mode of transport from Kollam to Trivandrum which are plenty and take only about an hour.

If you like authentic South Indian dishes, do go to Prashanthi Hotel, which is a walking distance from the Kollam beach. Its a budget hotel, with a good restaurant. Rooms are fairly large.( being amidst the town, noise level is little high ) Receptionist is very friendly and helpful.

The best way to go there is to drive upto the boat house which takes about 30 minutes (15 km) and go on a boat ride to the beach through the backwater. If you feel like a beer, you can have it at the cafe right in the middle of the water. You can easily spend an hour at the beach and nibble hot corn while there. Worth the trip.
