About
Located in the area facing the Pacific Ocean in the city of Hitachinaka, Hitachi Seaside Park offers beautiful flowers in its well-kept, large gardens throughout the year. In spring, narcissuses, tulips and nemophila (baby blue eyes) attract lots of visitors. In early summer, poppies and roses, and in summer, zinnias and sunflowers, bloom. In autumn, you can enjoy kochia (summer cypress) and cosmos flowers. In winter, ice tulips can be seen, making for a rich complement of flora throughout the year. The Pleasure Garden, which features over 25 rides and attractions, includes a Ferris Wheel sitting 100m above sea level and offering outstanding views. Other destinations that allow you to enjoy nature include the Rinkan Athletic Grounds, Barbecue Zone, and Cycling Course.

We bought the three days Tokyo Wide Pass (15000 Y) for our visit to this park, Ashikaga Flower Park, Kamakura and Showa Kinen Park.
We took the 7 am Limited Express Train Hitachi No 1(for Iwaki) and arrived at Katsuta Station. We reserved our seats on this train. Next we walked to a kiosk selling return bus ticket and entrance fee. It was 1150 Y on the day we went. Price do varies according to flowering conditions. We boarded the waiting bus and it was about 15 minutes before we reached the West Gate. We also waited at the same bus stop for the return bus. Although the website stated that the opening time is 9:30 , we saw that many people were already in the park at 8:55. On entering the park, we left our day bags in a locker on the right.
Walking down the left ramp, we saw the train and decided to pay 300 Y each to ride it to the Miharashi Hill.
We were amazed at the sight of the fully bloomed blue Nemophila covering the slopes of the hill and the weather was gorgeous on that day. We went on 21 April. Although there were many visitors but the space is hugh to accommodate everyone. We walked to the top to see the view of the Pacific Ocean and more Nemophila growing along the different slopes. We saw the bright yellow Rape Blossoms as we walked back towards the West Gate. We passed the Narcissus Garden with its wide varieties of Narcissus. Some of the early flowering Narcissus were wilting. Fortunately we walked across the Water Stage at the West Lake and came upon the enchanting display of tulips at the Eggs Forest Flower Garden. The tulips appeared to be freshly bloomed and much thought and effort were put into displaying the tulips in colour co-ordinated arrangements. It was simply a beautiful garden which covered a fairly large area and should not be missed. We took the bus at 12:03 to make our way to stay a night at Ashikaga. Our train journeys included two fairly long breaks of 20 minutes and 40 minutes. We bought the bento sets at Newsday convenience store for lunch at the Tomobe station. At Oyama Station, there is a shopping centre attached to the station including a 100 Yen shop. We bought lovely lightweight bags from the 100 Y shop. We went to the night illumination tour of the Ashikaga Flower Park and the next morning we toured the park at 8:00. Strongly recommend a visit here to see the spectacular display of Nemophila on the hill slopes as well as the colourful tulips

Fairly easy to get to from Tokyo on public transportation. You'll need to take a bus from Katsuta Station--way too far to walk. The park covers a very large amount of land. Your enjoyment will probably depend on what and how much is in bloom when you visit. I suggest combining it with a visit to Kairakuen.

Leaving the ryokan, we drive to Hitachi Seaside Park 国営ひたち海浜公園. Facing Pacific Ocean, this park offers beautiful flowers in well-maintained, large gardens throughout the year. The location used to be a military airport, then becoming a US Air Force firing and bombing range after the war.

But because it is close to residential area, some accidents happened, resulting in deaths of civilians. This drove the locals to request the land be returned. In 1973 they had successfully taken back the land and re-developed into this park.

There are two large car parks, one on the west and one on the south side, each can accommodate 2,000 cars. After paying the entry fee (450 yen) we go inside the Pleasure Garden, with various attractions including a Ferris Wheel 100m high.

The Grassland Flower Garden 大草原フラワーガーデン is the area between grass area and Pleasure Garden, home to poppies and linaria in early summer, and cosmos flowers in autumn.

There are some bunches of huge silver grass here that are much taller than a person.

The Miharashi no Oka Hill みはらしの丘 is the highest point in Hitachinaka City, the best scenic spot to visit during the nemophila season in spring, or kochia season in autumn.

The kochia is groomed to ball shape, covering the whole hill, making a very beautiful scene.

During the visit the kochia is starting to turn red, and in another couple of weeks the whole hill will become fiery red, and this place will be one of the busiest tourist spots in Japan.

The Narcissus Garden スイセンガーデン covers nearly a hectare, and is the largest garden in Japan dedicated for narcissus.

The Tamago no Mori Flower Garden たまごの森フラワーガーデン is inspired by the landscapes of Holland and features a variety of egg-shaped objects scattered throughout the garden, with also a miniature windmill and drawbridge, blooming with tulips in spring.

A huge park where one can see the 360° views of this beautiful vast landscape. Seas of colourful yellow & blue flowers/plants. Especially beautiful when the wind blows & you see the swaying of the flowers/plants.
It is very far from Tokyo. Though beautiful,it may not be worth going all the way here just for this park- unless one has plans to go somewhere not too far from here.

Flowers bloomed rather early this year, and it was past peak when we came to see the sea of blue flowers (nemophila). Nevertheless, it was absolutely stunning and very impressive. The trip from Tokyo on the train was a bit expensive but quite comfortable using the Tochiwa/Hitachi limited express and changing to a bus at Katsuta. As it was busy season, there is a special round-trip shuttle bus and entrance fee package for ~1550yen per person from Katsuta station. The park was very busy even on a weekday. But they are well prepared for big crowds as there were tons of washrooms and also many food trucks inside the park to make it a comfortable trip.

It's very beautiful park, a lot of red Kocia, flowers and whole area are very scenery.

There are many food trucks in the park selling all kind of street food. You can rent bicycle to cycle around the park or take the electricity cute train to travel around. Highly recommended.

Although the glass wasn’t that red, it still looks kinda pretty. The park itself is very large that I couldn’t take a full walk through it

We went early October, and there definitely was an element of disappointment in not being able to see kochias at their peak as shown in the pictures, but thankfully the kochias had started changing color sufficiently that we got to see a gradient of colors and it still looked very beautiful and picturesque. Apart from the mounds where the Kochia fields are, there are nice trails through the woods as well as trampoline for kids. The peak time for kochias is mid-October. The “Kochia festival” starts at September end itself though, which caused confusion and had us believe the kochias would be at their peak. We then walked to the flower garden, which is nice too but not as spectacular as the kochias. I will let photos do the talking than type on plants.

To get here, take Hitachi Line from Ueno to Katsuta which is covered by JR Pass but unfortunately you’ve take a bus from there to park which is 400 yen each. It is definitely a unique attraction which makes the money justifiable, but it’s worth analyzing season you’re going as apart from few days in the year most of the year there is nothing interesting to see. We will come back in spring for nemophilias.

Cool park full of flowers and giant pumpkins. Easy to get to with special weekend bus for red flowers from Katsuta station. Nearby Nozomi super day spa was also a nice visiting choice.
