It's fun to be in the pool with someone and putting mud on each other and having fun... but it costs quite a lot for what it is. If you can afford it do it, but if it stops you from eating. Don't. Really enjoyed...More

We came for the sulfur pools & spa and loved the hiking/tour the most. There is quite an extensive tour of the thermal area that is included here. We also had a soak in the sulfur pools. We had a great afternoon.

An interesting look at a variety of thermal pools and activity. We did the walk unguided at lunch time, and were surprised at how how it was, Good to save the mud pool and spa for after the walk. A fairly unique experience that we...More

The walk thru the different landscapes and different pools was really informative. At the end of the walk we got try our hand at some carving, then took the carvings home--it was a cool experience.

Absolutely stunning place, the 20 minute mud baths followed by the hot pools left our skin feeling amazing, not even to mention the sleep we had afterwards. Staff were friendly and facilities clean. The outdoor shower after under the stars was a beautiful way to...More

You need to book in advance for the massage and private message and bath.
Hi TA mates, I'm looking to book a geothermal walk, mud bath and sulphur spa combo at Hell's Gate. I understand you can do the walk self-guided or with a guide (runs twice a day?). Can anyone advise which option might be best? And does the guided walk cost more/available in the combo package? I'm thinking the guided option might be very crowded and impersonal in November so may be best to take the self-guided option to avoid large crowds? The visit would be in November. Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also we will be driving down from Pokeno (south of Auckland) that day so thinking it best to detour around Lake Rotorua to Hell's Gate before entering Rotorua for the night (with a motorhome). Would that be the most practical (assuming road north around Lake Rotorua is suitable for motorhomes?). Please forgive me if these are stupid questions - I've not visited Rotorua before:) CHeers, LIsa.
