We had the Mud Pool experience. This was nice but definitely not worth $75 per person! You sit in a shallow hot pool (there are 3 pools) with muddy water and gather the mud off the bottom of the pool or out of a couple...More

We did the walkaround the Thermal Park then had the mud bath. The Thermal Park is great and the kids loved seeing the boiling mud and hot springs. Then we did the mud bath, very relaxing and well worth it. The hot spa after was...More

I think we had high expectations of this one. We'd heard great things about the spa experience and been told that a trip to a geothermal spa in Rotorua was a 'must do.' Good things first: the area is beautiful. I loved the almost 'museum-like'...More

The size of this Geothermal Park is deceiving. A short drive out of Rotorua & well worth it as it was not overrun with tourists. They offer 2 guided tours a day or a self guided walk which is what we did, easy to follow...More

Popped in on our way east. The cable car is breathtaking and the history remarkable. Probably a little expensive entry, but worth it. Ice cream really expensive.., $6 for a scoop.

Our ultimud package was inclusive of entrance to the geothermal area, private mud bath, sulphur bath and Maori massage at the Spa. Although you won't find anything unique, the easy 1 hour walk through the bubbling pools and steaming lakes is really awesome, worth a...More

Thank you to the wonderful, professional staff at Hell's Gate and the fabulous tour guide who provided us with exceptional local knowledge. We had a great time enjoying this "must do" attraction and would highly recommend this to local and overseas visitors.

Ray gave a great, interactive guided tour. He is knowledgable. Lovely mud bath, and geothermal pools. Delighted that they have a courtesy car - they picked us up. You'll need a car to get there as, I think, public transport is not very accessible to...More

We tried a little of everything. The website was difficult to navigate as you have to make contact to book a massage unless getting a package and need to book 48 hours in advance on the website. However once you contact the staff directly they...More

Mid winter is a very quiet time to visit these types of attractions. Staff spoke to us about obtaining the best deals which saved us a bit of money. The staff were helpful and pleasant, especially up at the pools. After the tour we went...More

You need to book in advance for the massage and private message and bath.
Hi TA mates, I'm looking to book a geothermal walk, mud bath and sulphur spa combo at Hell's Gate. I understand you can do the walk self-guided or with a guide (runs twice a day?). Can anyone advise which option might be best? And does the guided walk cost more/available in the combo package? I'm thinking the guided option might be very crowded and impersonal in November so may be best to take the self-guided option to avoid large crowds? The visit would be in November. Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also we will be driving down from Pokeno (south of Auckland) that day so thinking it best to detour around Lake Rotorua to Hell's Gate before entering Rotorua for the night (with a motorhome). Would that be the most practical (assuming road north around Lake Rotorua is suitable for motorhomes?). Please forgive me if these are stupid questions - I've not visited Rotorua before:) CHeers, LIsa.

Hi, we were there in November of 2015 and it wasn't crowded. The guided tour had approximately 10 people on it. The mud pool had 2 others who got out a few minutes after we got in and the sulfur pool had one other family in... More
