Smolen castle seems to be outside the city but it is only because during last few hundreds years the city moved to the north – west direction and only the castle’s ruins indicate its original position.
First castle on this picturesque top of rocky hill is dated to back the XIII century. It is very probable that the first settlement was built there much earlier to protect the route between Cracow and Wroclaw. Unfortunately we were too late and to see it inside as it was already getting dark. However it is impressive ruins which seem very interesting.

It should be the point in your eagle nest trip for completeness, but if you have no time you can skip it. Too high to climb, not so much to see.

If you visit the castle make sure you climb the turret for a breathtaking view. You will understand why it was built in this location.

The climb may not be suitable for everybody but take your time and you can make it.

The castle is not located on the main trail of Eagles' Nest but real history travelers can't omit it. It has been recently renovated and now looks great. The castle is surrounded by beautiful park so you can also have a picknick close to the parking area.
