Very clean zoo and good animals seen like leopard, wild bear black and brown, big birds and few other animals. Lot of enclosures were empty but we'll maintained given the space it is built in. Enjoyed the trip

We'd read how awful Kufri was likely to be here on TA and when we saw the state of the horses being rented out we dug our heels in and refused to take a ride. Instead we went for a walk and came across the Himalayan Nature Park, next door to the Potato Research Centre (which should delight those who like to take photos of strange places).

For just 20 rupees each (I think we weren't punished with higher prices for being foreign) plus 20 rupees for my camera we spent a really pleasant hour wandering through the park. I'll admit at first that seeing multiple enclosures of barking deer aka muntjacs was pretty funny as they live wild back home in the UK. However moving on to the other deer and that Tahr goats things picked up and when we came to the carnivores we were bowled over. Several black Himalayan bears - big cuddly beasts - and a pair or frisky brown bears both gave great delight. We skipped the collection of pheasants but adored the leopard and his chilly cousin the snow leopard.

I normally despair in Indian zoos because people tend to shout and holler at the animals. My guess is that the 'shout and holler' crowd were off up the hill on their horses leaving a more discriminating crowd to stroll through the cool, shady nature park.

Highly recommended but be aware the exit is not by the entrance so you'll need to walk back again. Disabled access? - not at all, give it a miss if you are unsteady on your feet.

Ok so the walk through this Himalayan zoo is good.

You can walk leisurely. You can admire the dears and Sambhals and Monals and white peacocks and Himalayan bear.

But I felt bad for the old wolves that looked neglected. More than that the tigers, they are literally hooted at by people who come in big groups. They bang their prison bars, call them names and try to instigate them to come closer for a better view. We need to change our behaviour.

The park spread in area of 90 acres was established in 1992 and open from 10 am to 5 pm. Photography is chargeable for Rs 50/-. Avoid monsoon visits. We had visited in December in midst of snow all around and located in midst of jungle and nature. It takes approximately 1 hour to take a round. It is a good place of learning and witnessing the bio-diversity for kids and even adults too. Limited camping facilities and facilities for guided treks, especially for student groups, are available with permission of forest officer. There are Deers, Monals, Pheasants, Snow Leopard, White peacock, Tibetan Wolves, Himalayan bear. There is lot of flora and fauna seen around. Some common types of bushes and shrubs which can be found in the reserve are blue pine, deodar, holly, oak and spruce.

The kufri nature park wasn't recommend by the locals but to our suprise when we went it was a really great experience. We got to see all the animals from carnivorous leopards and bears to deers and sheep. It was a wonderful nature walk for us. Even got to check out the taxidermy of animals at the end. Definitely ticked off the bucket list for highest zoo in india

Its not a very big sanctuary but still its very well maintained by the management. The wild animals are much more well behaved than some of the visitors. I found a family who were throwing hard ice to a leapord named Ravi. Disgusting. I cant believe that old man,his wife 2 adult f#*in sons are enjoying throwing snow and even taking pride for that.. I called a care taker to show them whats happening, they immediately came with 2 guards and the took the family away. After that incident the care taker happily started to walk with me , chatting about d zoo and showed many more things which may not be opened for nornal visitors. He showed me A big cat named Ravi. A beautiful baby black bear. He was such a nice human being. I would like to request to the management to take tough decission against those who try to disturb the animals of the sanctuary.
And try to appoint more guards to look after ..

This zoo is located 500 meters ahead of horse riding point while you go from Shimla to Kufri, but surprisingly most of the people are unaware of the same. It has a snow leopard which is rare to find in most of the zoos.

The track up and down hill provides a vary good nature watch where animals are kept in ample amount of space. There is a lot of variety of animals available specially Goral, snow leopard and Himalayas bear. The is the place to just stroll if you are staying in Kufri enjoying wild animals , wilderness surrounding with maggi , pakora and tea. Do not forget to enjoy some good local wine and fruit cedar available in one of the shops in kufri .. (there are 8-10 small shops near the location only)

Go only if you got nothing else to do and would want to burn a few calories by walking on the trails inside the park. They charge you Rs. 25/- per person and they got nothing.

Warning : Beware of the monkeys while you are in Kufri. They snatch anything they can especially the sunglasses.
