The Cannonore Lighthouse was constructed in 1975 and commissioned in 1976. An extremely well maintained lighthouse it forms part of the Cochin Lighthouse District. We visited the lighthouse on our recent trip to Kerala and were recommended to visit the place for the views. There is an entry fee to enter the lighthouse complex within which is the museum as also the lighthouse proper. The lighthouse uses 'D' type sealed beam lamps and lights up the skies every night. Its light can be seen from as far as Payyambalam Beach.
The view from the lighthouse is awesome and the right time to visit the place and climb to the top of the lighthouse tower is in the evenings just prior to sunset.

Contrary to what we were told, we could leave our shoes outside the door and climb all the way up the spiral stairs to the top of the neat and tidy Kannur lighthouse. Commissioned into service on 25 July 1976, it still functions. On a Sunday evening, we (6 friends), along with several others, gazed at the vastness of the Indian Ocean and the local ambience from the top of this well-kept lighthouse.

The recently opened Kannur Light House Museum is the forth Museum of its kind in the country after Alapuzha, Chennai and Mahabalipuram. It is situated 3 kms from the city center in Payyambalam beach area adjacent to PWD Guest house. The light house and museum has a handful of rare exhibits on display and is very neatly maintained. You can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a beautiful view of the Arabian sea and the adjacent beaches. The view of the sunset from the lighthouse should not be missed. Although the entry to the lighthouse is open only up to 5pm we were allowed to stay on top till sunset. Adjacent to the entrance to the lighthouse museum is the cliff walkway, which is a beautifully maintained walkway along the seaside. Make sure you visit both the places when in Kannur. You will have to walk around 500 meters or so to get any form of public transport and if you are traveling by car there is ample parking near the lighthouse. There is a nominal entry fee to the museum as well as the walkway.

Visiting LightHouse at Kannur brings excitement in terms of being historic property, science exhibition (a tiny exhibition room explaining the history, instruments used at lighthouse).
View from the top of the light house is breathtaking.

There's a small charge, the lighthouse is set in a well maintained garden. You can walk around the museum display and watch a short film documenting the kighthouse history. Nearby is a lovely clifftop walk which which requires another ticket (small payment).

A musical fountain/light and sound show has been introduced recently. It begins at 7:15 pm and lasts for 15-20 minutes. The place after sunset gets even more beautiful. You can listen to the waves hitting the rocks and enjoy the evening breeze. About the musical fountain, it's definitely not upto the level of those in amusement parks like wonderla or even vismaya. But its definitely better than that at Brindavan gardens, Mysore. With the lighthouse at the backdrop, lit by the changing colours of the fountain, it's definitely worth watching. You have to obtain an entry ticket at Rs 20 per head.

The Kannur lighthouse is on the cliff next to Payamabalam beach, by the entrance of KTDC resort. The light house is not that tall however gives a beautiful view of the cliff, sea and the beach. Kannur, then Cannanore, was an important sea port for trade from 15th century onwards. One needs to pay Rs.20 per person for the lighthouse entry, Rs.20 per camera and the place is open from 10 AM to 6 PM, 1 PM to 2 PM being lunch hours; closed for lunch.
