Payyambalam Beach is a beautiful beach located in Kannur, and is one of the city's major tourist attractions. It is a long beach, well suited for beach walking. Surfing and swimming are also options for those who are interested. This beach attracts plenty of visitors, but is surprisingly well maintained

The Payyambalam Beach is an impeccably maintained destination in Kannur. This secluded location is known for providing one with the opportunity to simply relax or enjoy a family picnic in absolute tranquillity. Surfing and swimming options are also available for those who seek a little adventure. Being close to Kannur town has made it a favourite haunt for tourists and locals alike.

Payyambalam Beach, is situated right in the heart of Kannur. It is counted among one of the most beautiful beaches in Kerala. This expansive white sandy beach, measures close to a whopping 4 Kms. Straddled in between the Meenkunnu Beach in the North and the Cantonment Baby Beach in the South, this picturesque setting has captured the imagination of many cinema directors, including Mani Ratnam. Many movie sequences and songs have been canned on these inspiring sands.

I have many childhood memories of spending time at that beach with my parents. Lately myself and my wife, have had the recurrent privilege of playing parents and taking our two sons, there to frolic among the waves, as we stood guard and witnessed some memorable sunsets. It is very neat and clean. This fairly large expanse of sand, affords some privacy to small groups, as people who frequent the place, traditionally seem to respect family time.

Weekends and holidays attract large crowds to the beach. Then one can also get to see some adventure and watersports activities being hosted by specialists, like parasailing, jet skiing and snorkelling here. It is a time-honoured tradition to bid final farewell at Payyambalam, hence as one enters the beach, one sees the final resting places of some of the most famous sons of Kannur, like the Communist leaders AK Gopalan, EK Nayanar and more recently the poet Sukumar Azhikode, here. Recently, a welcome addition has been, a fairly large park, close to the beach. It is very popular with picnicing families. It has a play park for children, garden seating, flower beds, manicured well maintained lawns, some beautiful sculptures to enhance the aesthetic appeal, a few eateries, toilets and washrooms.

Sometimes if one is not having own transportation, then getting a hired transport is a problem, as there is no bus stop yet at the beach. With its growing popularity, I am sure the authorities will find a way to sort that out very soon.

This beach has inspired shutterbugs to click some of the most amazing beach pictures, that abound the net. All in all a must do when in Kannur, for the young and old. I recommend that one must try to plan a visit at sunset. They are absolutely, soul-stirringly amazing here. It is a treat one would be giving oneself! Enjoy Payyambalam, it is worth it!

I reached the beach on a monsoon evening around 4 pm and it was raining heavily. After waiting for sometime at the entry, I took my way to the beach when the rain reduced. The way from the entry to the beach was indeed good nicely constructed and maintained by the Kerala govt. The beach's spectacular view caught my eyes and I enjoyed the calm atmosphere on the shore for sometime with an umbrella on my head. It was raining slightly and waves breaking on the huge rock on one side was a congenial atmosphere. When the rain stopped, I enjoyed the waves on my foot and legs and got a few clicks from a Kerala native. Though wanted to spend some more time, I had to leave due to fear of transport back to my hotel. An awesome beach for solitude lovers! One visiting Kannur should definitely visit this beach especially during sun set.

The beach has almost everything. The only people who are disappointed are those who think this as a Drive-In-beach, whereas that is Muzhuppilangad beach in Thellicherry.

Here you've a Theme park set by famous sculptor Mr Kanaai Kunhiraman, A children's park, An Ice cream corner, a Water Adventure point, Sunset watch @ northern side of beach, Crematoriums of Communist Martyrs so on....

The sunset itself will make the beach worth visiting. There's a sort of lagoon which's a bit dirty, hence not advisable to enter it.

An ideal spot to spend your evening. Definitely an excellent location to watch the beautiful Sunset. It is clean and linked to Fort Angelo though a pathway.

St. Angelo Fort

2 km from Kannur town. The fort was built by the Portuguese in 1505. Later, it was held by the Dutch and by the British. The historic monument still preserved in good condition. You can see here some Canons used during the old times.

No entry fee. Visit time : 8 am – 6 pm

One of the best beach in North Kerala.. Long Beach with white sand... But bit crowded... Problem faced by me here was connectivity, We had stayed here a bit longer as we wanted to see the sun set... We found it a bit difficult to find means of transportation back to hotel, We had to walk all the way to main road to get a Auto Rickshaw...

Payyambalam beach is a known as Kannur beach. Long stretch of sandy walkways and recreational facilities of this beach make is a favourite hang out. Close to the beach is the light house, and the children’s' park. Visitors can enjoy a good swim or surf in these tranquil waters. The beach is well maintained and looks picturesque on cool sunsets.

To be honest I was a little disappointed, this beach is peaceful not nothing quite spectacular, the sea is calm not many waves, lots of locals in the beach. The crowd enjoyed the water but I stayed away from it, you can enjoy a walk on the beach. Evening there are camel rides and a few small eateries that come up.

Payyamabalam beach is a well known landmark of Kannur . from the railway station the beach is about 2.5 kms only. the beach offers a very close view of the arabian sea and for those who love to play in the waves it is always possible.
on most of the evenings and on weekends the beach is well patronised. the beach also has an aesthetically designed and kept up garden.
the beach needs to have adequate lighting as once sun sets there is not enough brightness in the area which is a hazard.
