We stopped at Mount Olympus en route from Karditsa to Halkidiki
I hadn’t quite anticipated the long windy cliff edge roads to 1100m altitude where we had lunch at the wonderful Prionia.
My husband is Greek but he had never been so we enjoyed taking our two young children there.
The road trip was scary at times as I hate heights but it was a well maintained road, not busy this time of year and had some stunning views.
The cabin at Prionia had a log fire going, was surprisingly busy for April and served the most amazing authentic Greek bean soup, we were served quickly and despite this being a clearly touristy spot and having a captive market, it was very reasonably priced. It seemed locals from the nearby monastery were also eating there so must be good!
Some cute souvenirs on sale and an amazing wooden bridge over a stream by a waterfall right outside.
Great walks from this spot I believe and public toilets and car park available.
I bet it gets busy here but was fine when we went on a Friday in April.
Fill up your water bottles from the fresh mountain spring.

We stopped here on our drive from Katerini to Larissa stopping at the Olympus National Park Information Center. Finding it closed, we went up through the narrow twisting streets of Litochoro to the parking lot for the Enipeas Gorge. Here we entered the Olympus National Park and its trail running on top of the narrow concrete raceway for the municipal water supply. At certain spots, you actually see it running below as well as hearing the strong stream cutting through the beautiful gorge. After nearly 1 km, we arrived at the dam viewpoint where their water supply is tapped and the overflow produces an amazing waterfall. Its sparkling clear pool looks inviting but there is a sign “no bathing in the potable water supply”.
Those looking to bathe, need to find the noted Bath of Zeus by taking the more difficult/lengthy E 4 path we passed earlier on this trail. This trail was beginning to get crowded by 11 AM.

We hiked through the park on our way to the summit and it was beautiful the whole way. Forests, tree line, high altitude plains, it was all great. Lot's of Balkan Chamois and Roe Deer throughout the end of the hike, near the summit.

The nature at its glory. You can hike in the park for few months and not see it all I guess. Prefer visiting in the middle of the week and not Sundays / Holidays as it get very crowded . Keep in mind no cellular coverage while in the park, so no on-line cell phone navigation !!!

My 11 year old and I hiked from the parking lot to the two lower summits in a single day - difficult but extremely gratifying!
It's a really long climb but not in any way technical. Ideal is staying at the refuge and hiking the four peaks from there. We were in runners which did the trick but boots would have been better near the peak. There is a great alternative return from Skolio through the canyon below - check out a hiking map before hiking it.

Amazing views from Litochoro, which is a nice place to start the ascend. Very different landscapes during the hike with great views from Skourta to the seat of Zeus.

On guided day tour, we hiked for 30 minutes from trailhead into Enipeas Gorge, near Litochoro village. Late autumn colors were nice, weather was perfect on a clear day. Saw climbers with gears practicing in the distance.

On a clear day it is breat taking to walk up the trails of the Olympus. The trails are marked, and it is pleasant to walk in the wood. The cafe is a great place for a plate of soup on a cold day, or cold lemonade after climbing.

The Information Centre is on the edge of Litochoro in a large building that looks like a warehouse about half a mile up the road to Prionia. It is fabulous. A big, well-curated museum that is full of information and really helps visitors to understand the mountain. But it is poorly publicised. Well worth a visit.
