It is a few minutes walking up the hill. It is a nice walk. The castle was closed also the restaurant. So we walked around and back to the city center.

Such a great place guides you to the past with a windy but beautiful view. The restaurant has a good menu and reasonable prices.

We were driving from Rovinj to Pitvice National Park with a stop in Opatija followed by a stop here. The Nehaj Castle is Senj's main attraction and it looks over the town from a peak south of the harbour.

When we visited it was particularly windy, to the point that the car shook. I am small, my husband had to help me along as I was literally being blown off of my feet.

There is a small parking lot at the foot of the hill, do not park there, drive to the top of the hill where there is another decent sized lot.

The fortress of Nehaj was built in 1558 on top of the Nehaj hill to protect the territories and the town of Senj from attacks of Turks and Venetians. The construction was directed by a Croatian captain, Ivan Lencovic.

Materials from demolished houses and many other structures outside the fortress were used in its construction. The remains of some of these structures were discovered during excavations and repairs.

The fortress has a rectangular shape and is similarly oriented in each cardinal direction. The height of the fortress walls is 18 meters, the width is 23 meters. The outer walls are made of conditioned stone blocks 2 to 3,3 meters thick. Nehaj has 5 towers. The walls of the fortress have over 100 gun-slots and 11 slots for cannons.

The position of this castle made it possible to see ships approaching the coast. Inside the castle there is an interesting museum that tells the story of the so-called Uskoks, who were Christians from the interior of Croatia who fled to coastal towns to escape the invading Turks. The greatest desire of these Christians was to fight the Turks and regain their occupied lands.

In the centre there is a triple coat of arms, that of the Gradac archduke who administered Senj in that period flanked by those of Ivan Lenković (on the left) comprising the year of the fortress erection and of his successor captain (on the right). The premises for the garrison and the captain were on the first floor.

Inside, you will find a well-laid out museum that has excellent views over the town and bay.

A mighty fortress on the top of the hill of the same name where the Uskoks lived to defend the city of Senj from the Turks and Venetians.

A beautiful building from the 15th century with an even more beautiful view of all the surrounding islands and mountains, when you climb on its roof.

We stopped here on our trip from Rijeka to Senj. This 1558 Nehaj Fortress sits boldly and starkly alone with a commanding view over the Adriatic to Krk Island.
Although it was closed, today’s fine weather also gave nice views of the mountains to the back and historic Senj below.

Didn't eat there, but the fort itself is impressive with a great view and interesting architecture. It's easy to imagine uskoks of old while walking on walls during the foggy evenings and waiting for Venetian ships to come.
Anyway, educational panels are often only written in Croatian, so I don't really understand how should tourists understand them.

We decided to go through Senj on our trip from Plitvice to Rovinj as we wanted to travel along the coast (the drive itself is spectacular), and are very glad we decided to stop here for a coffee. Whilst walking back to our car, we spotted the castle and decided to drive closer and have a better look.

The castle is impressive from the outside but it is only when you go inside that you can appreciate how impressively restored it is. There are lots of information boards and displays to take in and the views of the town, islands and mountains, especially from the terrace on what is effectively the fourth floor, are amazing.

The gentleman who sold us our tickets (costing 20 kuna each) was friendly and helpful. As it is nearly the end of the season and I suspect Senj does not get as frantically busy as some of the more touristy towns, we had the place to ourselves.

If you are nearby, it is worth stopping to take a look at this amazing place and learn some of the history.
