You just can’t beat the views from here.
Unlike Corbridge Roman Town or Chesters Roman Fort where the car parks are immediately adjacent to the site, here the Fort is a good 15 minute uphill walk away. But unlike the other two, here the wall is excellently visible as it joins the fort and disappears into the distance. It is the most photogenic of these three sites. The Fort itself is, as expected, very similar in design to Chesters or Co-bridge, Corbridge though is a much bigger site and has a much better museum but you just can’t beat the views from here.

    Worth a look around
This site is extensively excavated. The latrines are very well preserved and intact. There could be better signage. What they have is informative but there just isnt that many. The museum is quite small and its housed in the gift shop. Inspite of this it was enjoyable and worth a stop.

    Amazing
I have always wanted to visit Hadrian’s wall as this was a great way to do it. A steep climb up but well worth the effort. Stunning and such an interesting period in history to learn about. I look forward to returning.

    Worth a visit.
Visited as part of a walk along the wall to sycamore gap. Fort was really interesting and the accompanying museum was very informative. Walk.to sycamore gap was great even in the rain. Walking along the wall was pretty special.

‘Graham from English Heritage Guided Tour’
We just came back from a spectacular visit to Housesteads Roman Fort-Hadrians Wall and what a magnificent place this is! With gorgeous sweeping views in every direction this is a spot worth exploring. The ruins themselves are perched atop a hill and the only way to see them is to hike up a gently winding hill. Please note that this hike will give one a work out, so give yourself some time to go slow and steady and wear proper shoes. Honestly, people of all ages were giving it a go. The hike is well worth it and the views along the way are simply breathtaking. Once we arrived we joined the tour which is what made visiting this historic site so special. In particular it was our wonderful tour guide, Graham from English Heritage, whose enthusiasm, extensive knowledge and passion for the information he was sharing with us, truly made these ruins come alive. I would definitely recommend this guided tour for a rich and unique experience, and hopefully you will be lucky to get Graham as your guide! Loved it!

    Good workout, Great view!
As is their claim to fame - this is the best preserved fort on Hadrian's Wall. We were blessed to be there on a day with a nice breeze so the "10 minute" walk from the visitor's centre to the fort itself was refreshing. It is steep so be prepared to take your time unless you are in great shape. The views from the fort and extent of the ruins are worth the hike - it is truly impressive what the Romans accomplished here so long ago. The small museum adjacent to the fort gives you an idea of the extent of finds located there and the short film was helpful to place this fort in history. We were able to get in free with our CADW membership (Welsh historic preservation charity), as they share admission costs with English Heritage. Parking was reasonable, we paid £4 for our visit.

    Great for children and adults!
Very good for children and grown ups. We borrowed Roman costumes from the museum- they encouraged us to. We played in the ruins (as perhaps Saxons once did) and walked on Hadrian’s Wall. Superb views and a nice little video to watch in the museum bit.

    A Fort Worth Visiting
Fantastic fort, location beautiful and the walls around the area stunning. Feels tranquil and relaxing just being there. The history is fascinating, and the museum has some excellent finds. Worth a visit. Dog friendly too! Free for National Trust members, expect to pay for parking.

    Good Fort to Visit
Housesteads is one of the best known Forts alongside Hadrians Wall. It is a National Trust property and well looked after with good storyboards and a museum giving clear details of life in Roman Times. The site is some way from the car park and facilities although the path is good it’s a challenging walk as it is both steep and exposed. It is worth making sure that you have sufficient time to throughly explore and also visit the wall itself.

    A glimse into the past.
Quite a treck to get there but well worth it. The fort was very interesting and gave a good insight into how the Romans lived back in the day. I did think it was expensive to get in and it would be worthwhile considering an English Heritage membership if doing a few differant sights.

Informative, pleasant members of staff.
Well worth the travel to experience this unique opportunity.
We attended an event in Scotland and stopped overnight to enable us to do this before travelling back to Devon.

Very well preserved ruins of a Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall. Lots of different areas to see and in a magnificent setting with great views. Also a good visitor centre with well presented information. To get to the fort requires a 10-15 minute walk uphill from the car park and the site is sloped and uneven so wouldn't be suitable if you have limited mobility.

OK its a long walk, and about halfway up I really regretted it, but the staff are friendly and the fort is a wonderful place to visit. We went in a hail storm with a storm blowing but it was amazing.
The carpark is expensive but the cafe was great and the toilets spotless.

Friends were walking a section of the wall and we agreed to meet here. I loved being able to walk a section of the wall (could be better signposted). Cafe staff were very friendly. Car park easy to use, pay on exit was very straightforward.

Housesteads Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall is well worth a visit. We were very lucky in that we joined a guided tour immediately upon our arrival there. That is definitely the best way to see the site as a tour brings the stonework to life.

Our guide was Alain who was absolutely excellent - his knowledge of the site and of the Romans generally, was really impressive.

Just a few hints - Housesteads is on an exposed ridgeline so wearing warm and windproof clothing is essential.

The location, the fort and its significance rate 5 stars. However, English Heritage could make more of it. Some of the information boards within the fort were sun bleached and in need of renewal. The Museum was limited. There appeared to be no live archaeology at the site and none appeared planned. The excitement of new discovery was lacking. The overall feeling was 'institutional', a site run by remote control. So 4 stars only.
