Best Place to Visit in/before Monsoon

752724701

This is one gem of the place which is close to Mumbai & Pune and attracts lot many nature lovers from across the country and India. During monsoon the Ghats become lush green and filled with cloud. It become bit dangerous to pass through as this place has experienced lot many landslides & Rockslide. Last June 2019 I visited Malshej Ghat with my two friends, We left Mumbai at midnight while it was raining cats & dogs. The Road are pretty good and we sailed through the dark pitched wet roads. There were CRABS on road which came from the nearby fields due to rain. Both Crabs & Snakes could be seen crossing roads. We reached early morning and what an amazing experience it was. The detailed road trp video to malshej is uploaded on youtube with #notkidding channel name

YOu can enjoy the entire the road trip or skip to malshej directly

150 km from Mumbai, drivable distance, is an excellent weekend getaway for a 1 night stay. Preferred time is monsoons due to the greenery and the water falls, but Nov-Dec is also a very good time to visit. There are quite a few view points designated with car parks for a short halt for photographs. Roads are good for the most part. Well lit at night due to the illuminators. MTDC resort is one of the best places for the night stay.

It's approximately 130 kms from Mumbai, once you cross Mumbai the road is smooth, greenery all around and very pleasant.
We traveled in June and we are totally rejuvenated.
The experience of Ghat and Mountains were superb. Found small water fall on the way to ghat and kids enjoyed fully.

In 3rd Week of December on the Way to Aurangabad , I traveled through this Ghat Road. Lots of greenery around . Though it was winter season so no waterfall but natural beauty was abundant . Top of the Hill I saw MTDC resort . Not very far from Mumbai , this is a good picnic spot also .

Went on a solo ride on 18 October 2020, just about the end of monsoon. A pleasant ride.

This place is very beautiful - several small waterfalls enroute, mountain ranges of Sahyadri, deep valley and pleasant weather.

A different experience to ride during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Though many families and several riders were seen at the place. Several points from where beautiful views can be seen.

You will enjoy the beauty of this place. This place is so chill compared to Pune city. The cliffs of the mountains, the water falls and the forests make the ghats an enchanting place. We got a feeling of being rejuvenated by just visiting the place and staying amidst Mother Nature.

This Place is true paradise in all seasons; we visited this place in winter, Monsoon and summer too.

Malshej Ghat is at it best in Monsoon, you are in the midst of clouds, dense Fog, the Green valley, enjoy lots of water falls on the way, ... Just amazing ...In pouring rains of July/August a drive to Malshej ghat is life time memory for everyone.

Hardly a 130KM and 3 hrs drive from Mumbai and Pune.

visited as Familiy (2 Adult + 2 Children), used Swift Dzire car.

Reaching to Malshej Ghat: We experienced and used all the roads to Malshej Ghat.

From Mumbai - Mumbai(NH3) -Kalyan (NH222) -Murbad (NH222) -Malshej(approx 150 kms from Powai, Mumbai) - New constructed Road, No pothole, very less traffic. Last visited on 6th May 2012.

Once you cross a Ghat Mandir, then small tunnel through the mountain, after 200 Mtr take Left turn towards MTDC resort to reach Picnic Spot.

From Pune - Pune - Chakan - Nashik Highway - Alepahta - Mashej ghat - NH50 double road is in good condition, heavy traffic from Alephata to Malshej Ghat (NH222) road is just OK, few Pothole, - last visited May'12

From Shirdi - Sangamner Nashik Highway (NH50) - Alephata - Malshej Ghat - NH50 (single road) is in good condition, Last visited in February 2012.

Place to Stay : Only place to stay, eat and relax, its called Flamingo resort of MTDC. Normally packed all the monsoon weekends.

You can eat at in this restaurant without staying in resort. We had a Food many times, however was not great, anyway no other options, just check the food quality before eat, as we have been provded "Basi Food" .

We have not stayed to MTDC, hence can't share experience. However from outside Rooms are good.

For One day Picnic need not to book stay, Just reach Malshej Ghat, go towards back side of MTDC (from Main gate take Left turn), you can park your vehicle here.

Its very big plateau and beautiful place for Picnic, MTDC has newly constructed the Trace wall / railings for this place,

Go all around walking with railings and enjoy, cool & heavy monsoon wind, you will find cloude touching you all around, and rain in full fury due to its location of breath taking green valley of Sahyadri hill Range.

Please remember :

1). during monsoon it is covered with clouds so drive slowly, carefully.
2). in the monsoons, families should go there only from Monday to Thursdays to avoid drunken, rowdy weekend crowds.
3). NH3 and Kalyan city Traffic will take 2-3 hrs to escape, hence keep extra time for these traffic.
4). During Weekend, we observed Traffic Police is checking the Vehicle and Papers, hence carry all document of your vehicle.

Places to nearby (incase you stay over night) :
1). There is the lake and dam a KM away from MTDC for another picnic spot,
2). Visit Shivneri Fort (Birth place of Shivajee) approx 20km from Malshej Ghat, road condition is Ghat driving, not a great road, many potholes however drivable)
3). Visit Lenyadri – Ashtvinayak Mandir into ancient Buddhist caves, on the way to Shivneri Fort.

Located at about 120 Kms from Thane, Malshej Ghat can be easily accessed by private vehicle or by ST bus from Vashi and Kalyan. By car it can be reached within 3 hours via thestate highway 222 (also called NH 61), which is in good condition, except the Kalyan - Shahad 5 Km patch and few spots just before Malshej.

Starting from Ghodbunder Road, Majhiwada petrol pump (odometer 000 Kms), 0nce you are on NH 160 highway, cross the Thane Bhiwandi toll naka (Rs 29) at odometer 005.9 Kms, take right at the large cross road junction on the NH 61 (also called SH 222). As soon as you turn right on NH 61 there is first Indianoil petrol pump on left, also Mahanagar Gas CNG station on left. Beware of the Mahanagar Gas CNG as people have given negative reviews of this station as they over charge or cheat my manipulations.

Continue straight till you see a left turn on bridge and crossing that will take you to Shahad, You will come across Centuary Rayon factiry o left at odometer 026.4 Kms. After this there is a dusty village of Govaili, where you will see lot of autos parked on road. The only good vegetarian restaurent here is Dajiba Dhabba. It offers Thali, Dal Khichidi, Paneer and other Vegetable, Dal fry, etc at reasonable rates. This is the only proper vegetarian hotel and there is no good food joint till Malshej Ghat and return, where you will find large variety with a good taste. So, either have food here or pack it for two days if you are a vegetarian.

If you miss Dajiba Dhabba, it is highly recommended that you try excellently cooked Poha (Rs 50), Sheera (Rs 50) and Tea (Rs 20) Coffee (Rs 30) at the Nilesh Punjab Restaurant (vegetarian) which will comes on right hand side of the road at odometer 037 Kms after 1.5 hours from starting point. While these preparations are very good, the missal is horrible. They remain open from 7 am to 10 pm on all days.

After this you will also come across Vruksha After this you will also come across Vruksha Valli Restaurant at 070 Kms with average food followed by Indian Oil petrol pump on right side at 071 Kms

At odometer 075.5 be on a look out for a very good place famous for its Tea called as Hotel Subhash. I can assure you that you that you will get the best tea here on this whole route. Adding to that you can have very good missal pav, vada pav and bhajjias They have basic seating arrangement with farm view.

At 111 Kms you will see a mandir on the right in a small cave also known as Krishna Bela point. Then you will pass a tunnel.

At 113 Kms you will find a narrow lane going left (can be missed easily so be alert). This leads to MTDC resort, the only place for cheap accommodation. Rooms here start from Rs 1500 for simple double bed room to Rs 3,500 for private AC bungalow and Rs 3000 for a non AC bungalow. All bungalows have valley facing balcony. There is another place Sushant Resort, which is 5 Kms ahead from MTDC at 118 Kms, but with good and lavish rooms starting Rs 6500 going up to Rs 12,000. They have restaurant also. Just outside Sushant Resort there is a eatery on highway which sells reasonably priced food.

Flamingo Restaurant at the MTDC serves reasonably good food at reasonable prices. They have good water filter for drinking water so no need to buy mineral water.

MTDC offers very good breathtaking views of the valley and clouds. They have placed railings on the edges for safety and benches for sitting and enjoying the scenery. There is a play area for children, wheel chair facility for the needy and a very large parking area.

Malshej Ghat is at its best during monsoons when clouds surround the resort and even spray fine mist on your face. It is for someone who needs a peaceful holiday amongst the mountains, loves the nature and tranquility. and certainly not those for those who look for shopping, crowds and interested in watching TV inside their rooms.

You can easily visit Malshej Ghat in one day from Thane, Mumbai and Pune as it is only 3 hours journey. You need to stay overnight if you want to see other nearby spots also. There used to be thousands of migrant flamingoes in the nearby lake but since last two years their numbers have come down drastically.

During monsoon season, from Friday to Saturday, MTDC is fully booked as Malshej Ghat is overcrowded. If with family, avoid going from Friday to Sunday during monsoon season. During off-season there is hardly a soul to be seen.

You can visit Shivneri, the birth place of Shivaji and see the fort. It takes less than 45 minutes to reach Shivneri from MTDC, and another 3 hours to climb up the hill to see the fort, and come down. There are two Asht Vinayak – Linyadri and Ozar. Linyadri will come 2 Kms short of Shivneri Fort, and for Ozar you will have to drive another 20 - 30 mins from Shivneri. But as the roads and scenery are good, the drive is enjoyable. Harishchandragarh Fort is also worth visiting.

Only Hutch and Idea will be able to catch weak and intermittent signals, so you will be at peace to enjoy the nature. Junnar village near Shivneri will be the only spot where all the cell phone servioces will work properly.

Upon return from MTDC, you will get petrol pumps at 164 Kms, 171 Kms, 179 Kms, 194 Kms and 203 Kms on NH 61. There is no CNG filling station on this route till you each Kalyan.

After monsoon we wanted to enjoy the nature's trail in winter and favorite destination i.e. once again at Malshej Ghat, a quick weekend getaway

On 17th November started at 06:00 AM from Powai Mumbai, used Powai -> Thane -> Kalyan -> NH222. Very good road condition, very smooth Drive, No traffic, reached Malshej Ghat at 09:15 AM. Just before Malshej Ghat road constructions were on, however no traffic jam etc.

Weather was cool around 10 Degree temperature,

We surprise to find new 3 nos. "View Points" created, We named it as Sun Raise + Sun set Point, you can drive-in with Car to these points. These are just before tunnel and after tunnel.

After crossing the Ghat Mandir, and tunnel, we parked the car in left (very safe parking area) and walk-in the newly constructed "Sun Raise + Sun set Point" (See Photo). Awesome breath taking scenery from here.

For One day Picnic we had not booked the stay at MTDC, We Just reached MTDC, went towards back side of MTDC (from Main gate take Left turn), parked our vehicle here.

Its very big plateau and beautiful place for Picnic, MTDC has newly constructed the Trace wall / railings for this place, walking with railings and enjoyed, cool winter wind, watching breath taking green valley of Sahyadri hill Range.

We had our breakfast and lunch here through packed food from Mumbai.

Not tried any food from Flamingo restaurant of MTDC resort. However it was open for Breakfast and Lunch for all i.e. for MTDC guest as well as day picnic travelers.

We started by 03:00 PM towards Shirdi through Malshej Ghat -> Ale Fata -> NH50 (Pune – Nasik Highway) -> Sangamner -> Shirdi. Reached Shirdi by 06:00 PM.

Road condition was OK, find slightly rough road (like immediate after Monsoon) however drivable.

Please remember:

1). during winter cool weather hence please carry some warm cloths.
2). during winter, you will find early sunset hence start back journey early in the evening to avoid darkness and curve road driving in night.
