This is a “must see” in Gramado. Really interesting and cultural, beautiful pictures and some educational for children.
Buy tickets at internet and arrive early to avoid long lines.

Pensávamos que seria um passeio monótono mas a visita guiada pelo instrutor RAFAEL fez toda a diferente no Museu MUNDO À VAPOR!! Um passeio pela história e evolução das máquinas! Do vapor à eólica! Ao final um passeio de trem !
Muito lindo e lúdico para todas as idades !
Parabéns a todos !

We thought it would be a monotonous tour but the tour guided by the instructor RAFAEL made all the Difference at MUNDO À VAPOR Museum!! A walk through the history and evolution of machines! From steam to wind! Finally, a train ride!
Very cute and fun for all ages!
Congratulations to all of you !

From the imposing recreation of a very unusual train accident at the entrance, one would think this is just a train musuem. And though trains do play a special part in the attractions inside, it's a bit more than that.

A young man in the 1950's started a hobby of recreating vapour-powered machines - and over time these were put in model settings representing several locations around the world which had influence in the history of energy generation. The guides/monitors, who are necessary for the visitors to get the full jist, are continously available, including some who lead English or Spanish-speaking groups. It's a brief, but truly educational and enjoyable tour. By the way, the machines are in working order and one, for example, creates paper for the visitors to take home as a memento.

There are nice spaces for kids to experiment - not quite on the level of kids' museums in the US, but for Brazilian standards, above average.

There is a simple train ride, which will be upgraded; the current one really is aged and though adults and kids go on it, it's more like a kiddie-ride. It's the only outside activity.

Something else that will be improved is the lovely train model - which shows how one would have traveled by that form of transportation from the capital Porto Alegre to Canela (unfortunately, train transportation fell out of favor in Brazil in the 1950s). Currently, the trains aren't doing the rounds that fascinate kids and adults alike.

We also enjoyed taking a family picture in the "historical photo" area. And the souvenir store actually had really reasonable prices, as it was doing a post-Christmas sale.

All in all, a really worthwhile attraction to visit while you're in Gramado and Canela.

Disclaimer: I know the current operations manager, who invited us. But we noticed the prices were not exorbitant at all (if you're a student, R$ 20).

I recommend indoor activities in Canela as a way to stay busy and out of the hot sun until the cooler evening hours when the shows in downtown Gramado will be more tolerable.

They have an impressive collection of miniatured and fully functional machinery that are landmarks in the human industrial developments. The whole visit is guided by the staff who also demonstrate the operation of the machinery. Great for people interested in learning history, energy, engineering etc.

I had no expectations for this attraction, nor I knew what it was about before visiting. I assumed it was for kids only, but I was wrong. I must say I was pleasantly surprised and that I highly recommend it. You will learn a lot about the Industrial Revolution here, miniatures of steam engines, factories and mills throughout the building that actually function. They offer entertainment by giving guided tours of how the processes worked back in time and will even provide you a souvenir of paper made in real time from the smallest paper mill in the world ( according to them ). It's quite interesting, I normally get distracted in these type of attractions but here I was very engaged. The facade of the building is actually a replica of a real life event that took place in Paris in the 1800's when a locomotive lost its brakes and climbed a wall getting stuck there.... surreal! They have guides who speak fluent English so if you choose you may ask for one at the box office.

I would recommend visiting it if you are in Canela. I would not say you need to go to Canela because of it. Entertaning and full of history of the city, it's definitely a place in the city you should go!

A cheat, it looks like a science fair for kids. Too expensive for a place with poor and bland attractions.

Very nice place, it's a kind of museum related to steam power machines, specially railroad. In fact, there is a small railroad one can go to experience. Some stores sells souvenirs and there is a Cafe also. You can ask for a new ticket at the exit and return within five days without paying again. Good for all ages, don't miss it.
