Stayed in an amazing hotel built on the ruins & inside the walls. Ground are stunning and food very good. Breakfast is a bit mean & some of the staff are unfriendly by Albanian standards. Have travelled through Albania twice & everywhere else we have stayed they are amazingly friendly & hospitable

The castle was initially built by the Illyrians more than 2 thousand years ago. Then it was occupied and rebuilt by the Romans as it was an important stop in Via Egnatia connecting Durres with Constantinopol. Was destroyed by an earthquake then to be rebuilt again by the ottomans in the 15th century. It was also surrounded by a canal of water at that time for protection. The castle is in need of renovation though and more excavation is needed also in the eastern and western walls to make them acsesible. Inside the castle walls is full of house and there are and old mosque and an old church both worth visiting. Recently there was another castle discovered in Elbasan not far from this one with the same planimetry but smaller which is thought to be built during 17th century

Made a quick stop here in the rain on a tour, so unable to appreciate too much of it! However, appeared to have an interesting history and lots of the walls are still in evidence . Fortress and archeology

It was ok for about a ½ hour visit to walk through the streets, but not a ‘true’ castle like in the UK. Mostly the old walls were there, and there was an excellent café with pretty grounds and flowers where they have preserved some of the ancients ruins. Outside they are doing an archaeology dig of an old church that is interesting. Overall – so-so. Difficult for people with mobility issues.

This must be one of the very few castles in Albania that are located in the a valley, rather than on a hill top. The exterior wall is quite well preserved, and through one entrance you can see the half ruinous state of a tower. Inside the walls, there is a mix of old and new houses, so not as special as most other castles. However, there is a nice orthodox church, Saint Mary, with some remaining frescoes on the ceiling (clearly too high for the communists activist to reach), as well as a lovely iconostases, bishop throne and pulprit. Certainly open on Sundays. Also a nice mosque that can be visited.
From the guidebook we were let to think that Elbasan was a depressed post-industrial town, but certainly the centre is very nice and not al all depressed!

One of not usual types of castles: a 'living' one! I was impressed by it, I liked the way it was preserved and what most hit me: a route that has roots in old history, Egnatia pathway. You can see a part of the living city with houses, shops, services, mosque and many other 'facilities' that make it u inseparable from the city.

Some substructure has been kept but mainly it is the high-and 3m thick-walls to appreciate. Yet again restaurants and shops have taken over the interior, giving the area a viable presence.

Stopped during a road trip from Tirana to Skopje this summer. A few memorials along the wall, but information on them was in local language. Nothing exciting behind the walls, the old town from what we could see had given way to more modern houses. Across the street, there were more informative information signs as well as you young adults from the tourist office who were giving out tips and hints on what to do. Very good! Wish we had more time to explore the city. Next time...

The isn't much but the main wall of the fortress facing the street, but that is an active pedestrian are a with many cafes, restaurants and shops. The people of the city are out walking most evenings. There is a pleasant traditional restaurant right inside of the Fortress arch. I got the Elbasan Tava, a lamb stew, with eggs and vegetables, a specialty of the city.
