The bridge is well preserved and is 117 metres long and has a stone slab surface. It was built in the 1st century C.E. and was part of the road connecting the cities of Merida, in Spain, and Lisbon. It is in a very good state of repair and until recent years was open to vehicle traffic. It is possible and perfectly safe to walk across it. There is a small car park and picnic area on your right about 100 metres before the bridge.

Quite a peaceful spot even though a modern motorway bridge has been constructed nearby at a higher level. Great to be able to walk right across the bridge - still in great condition despite its age. There is an information panel at one side of the bridge, and a picnic area close by ( which would benefit from a tidy up! )

A construction that still stands perfect 21 centuries after it has been built is something to be revered. It is a testimony to the finest engineering work ever made without using cranes or heavy machinery. Minor reparations occured between 2001 and 2003.
On the downside the surroundings of the bridge namely the picnic area and accesses are run down and definitely deserved some attention. The bridge more than deserves it.
