It is a real jewel in a desolate state. The wall paintings are in urgent need of restoration. Two local guides are there for the visitors and ask for 460 birr at the end of the visit.

It was nice to see what the ancient people were thinking and the historic tour was very informative. We had a good guide and was very professional.

Be careful with the guides around this church. Ask to see their ID to ensure they are real guides. Some of them are trying to charge way more than required for the tour of the church (i.e. more than the rate at Lalibella to tour...More

Easy access to this interesting church. It's built of sandstone and its most striking feature is the decorated 15th Century pillar depicting pictures of saints and angels. It also has a high ceiling with line drawings which still shows some blackening caused by a large...More

We would have been more impressed if this had been the first. Very easy to access compared with others, though.

I went after visiting some other churches. The best part of this church is it's accessibility. Other churches are better...but this is easy to reach.

This is one of the better rock-hewn churches north of Mekele, but not as good as Lalibela. There are priests around, good quality religious paintings inside, and a market at the foot of the hill with some good photo opportunities.

This church is very accessible, with lovely views of the area and a vibrant Saturday market below. Our guide, Yalew Tafete of Guide Ethiopia Tours who was with us for the entire 3-week trip, answered every question and was able to tell us the stories...More
