A natural border between Kosovo and Macedonia. Rugova Mountain is an amazing place for hiking and adventure thrillers. Almost 6 km far from Peja city. Enjoy rock climbing or zip lining.

There are things in Kosovo that one may not expect to see. How many really knows about the values of that country?
Rugova region is located near the second largest city of Kosovo, Peja (or Pec in Serbian, but don't expect local people to recognize that name). It is a part of Bjeshket e Nemuna, Accursed Mountains, which reach also to Montenegro and northern Albania. And it is determined to be one of three hotspots of biodiversity in Europe.
Rugova gorge follows the river Lumi Bardhi (White River) and starts almost right from the city Peja. It can be driven through by car. There are a few restaurants along the way, and many people stop their journey there. But you should do more - jump into your hiking boots and climb a bit higher! Building touristic structures is starting slowly, but there are already some signs and trails. Here are a few tips where to go:
* Waterfall trail: easy access just close the main road, the 800 m long trail with stone steps and wooden bridges leads you to a beautiful waterfall.
* Liqeni: start your journey either from 1100 m from the T-junction of the main road or from the restaurant Guri Kuq, and climb to 1800 m and you will find a small mountain lake. Dip into the lake or enjoy the amazing landscapes.
* Hajla mountain (2403 m): Start your journey from the village of Pepaj in 1700 m, and climb to the top of Hajla. From the top you can see, in addition to Rugova's highest peak Guri Kuq (2522 m), to Montenegro, and with clear weather to Albania. Breath-taking views. There is a small simple cabin in 2000 m that you can sleep in with small price.
* Gryka e madhe - "Great Canyon" cave complex (accessible only with a guide)

The title says it all: just do it. there are places in rugova mountains that would leave you speechless. Perfect for climbing, there are water springs all over the place and the interesting thing is that water is drinkable; adventurers may also proceed to Guri i Kuq (Red Gravel) which is located on the altitute of 1.3 km (approximately) from where one may go to the lake which is surrounded by pine trees and spend the night there. Wonderful place to visit would also be Boge, which is approximately 20 km away from Rugova canyon, which has a ski lift and is also perfect for climbing or simply enjoying the beautiful nature. Again; JUST DO IT.

Rugova Gorge and Valley is the central area of Rugova Mountains, inhabited partially in 13 marvelous mountain villages. The Gorge starts at the 3rd kilometer from Peja City up to Drelaj Village at 12th kilometer, about 9 km long, followed by Rugova Valley additional 17 km. The whole distance of 26 km is linked with asphalt coat road along the crystal clear and deep blue water of Lumbardhi River. During the ancient and medieval times the road of Caravans passed through the Gorge, travelling from Dalmatian cost, Ragusa, Kotor, with their destination Peja (Siparundi, Ipek, Ipekli, and Pec), well-known commercial center of the time. Once, the main linking road between Kosovo and Montenegro, last 25 years was replaced by the new road via Rozaje. Recalling that in Former Yugoslavia Peja Region including Rugova Mountains and the Rugova Gorge, was one of most touristic regions, including its unique attractions of cultural heritage. Having all this gifts of the Good and manmade values, we are organizing frequent organized tours, City Breaks, Excursions and visits for international visitors from USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Denmark, Greece, Italy, including visits of international community working in Kosovo.
The road from Peja to Plav in Montenegro is on the completion phase.

We stayed in the centre of town at Hotel Dukagjini (nice central hotel). The tourist office across the street which was very helpful in providing maps and advice on hiking. Many guide books say you need a guide to tour but the local office said not. We chose to drive through the Rugova Gorge to the farthest walk that climbs to a lake at 1800m. The drive takes you past the UN KFOR guarded Patriarch of Pec - worth a visit - lovely place nestled in the mountains. Then you have a drive through the dramatic gorge and on up the mountains to the start of the trail. The road is windy and fairly narrow but OK and asphalt all the way. There views are stunning and there are places to part and take photos. At the parking lot at the head of the trail there is a restaurant (Guri i Kuq - outstanding place for lunch. Just before the arch of the parking lot there is a trail that takes you up to the lake. It is a steep climb and you need trainers of hiking shoes/boots but the trail is well marked with red and white markers on rocks and trees. The climb takes about 90 mins and is a 400m + climb but the vistas are stunning. Take water and check weather before you go - also note that the temperatures is many degrees cooler than in Peja - although with the steep climbs extra layers in July were not necessary. When you get back treat yourself to lunch/dinner at the Guri i Kuq. A lovely family owned restaurant with outstanding home made food and wonderfully friendly service. We had a Salad and House Special - delicious and inexpensive.

Already the drive from Peja into the Rugova Mountains is breathtaking. And we are from Austria, so we are not easily impressed by a couple of hills or so...
One of the most exiting experiences was the flora of the region. just in terms of ordinary kitchen herbology we found: minimum four different types of thyme -including lemon thyme with a strong scent and origano, sage and different kinds of mint... horseradish, roses, -- you name it.
All that accompanied by a beautiful, almost kitschy landscape and the ubiquitous Kosovar hospitality. full recommendation!

I visited the Rugova Valley on 3 March, 10 days after a major snowstorm. The road were well-plowed and easy to drive, a selection of restaurants and hotels were open, and the views of mountains and river valleys was spectacular. The valley starts on the far side of Peya, only an 80" drive (on a Sat) from Pristina.
This was wintertime, so no hiking. We were blocked by snow about one mile from the end, a hilltop from which, I was told, you can see a Montenegrin flag. Only smugglers using foot paths can cross the border here. Marvelous views in every direction, and we were fortunate to have a sunny and (relatively) warm day for our excursion.
Skiing is available at Boge, perhaps 25 km up the canyon, with a rope tow, rental gear, and a 1km blue run. I wanted to ski, just to say I'd done it, but my friends weren't skiers. Too bad.
I cannot recommend too highly that, if you have the time, you drive through the 30km length of Rugova. I really enjoyed getting away from the traffic & pollution of Pristina.

One of the best natural sites to visit in Kosovo and a "must see" if you come here. Interesting drive along the river at the bottom of a deep gorge amid soaring cliffs. Several restaurants and lodges along the way. Literally on the edge of the city of Peja. An easy drive, but fascinating. Let someone else drive so that you can ogle the scenery.

I'd like to recommend the services of our guide Nol Krasniqi who was a fun and knowledgeable local guide and showed us the lakes and drove us around. Great local insight.

I would like to know if I can get a taxi from pristina Airport to the Rugova camp and how much it would cost.

I want to know if you can actually drive through this area. Google maps is only showing me a route that goes outside of the mountain area. Is the M9 a drivable road, from Peja to Kuqishtë? Also, does anyone have web links to any accommodation along that route?
Written 19 February 2017
Yes, it’s a road. There are various hotels along it.

Hi, I would greatly appreciate it if you can let me know if I need to rent a car to drive through the gorge or I can take public transportation to see all the attractions of the place.
Thank you.

Are there any mountain guides that speak English? I want to visit and hike this spring, so your recommendation is highly appreciated!
