About
Among the most famous of the castles in the Aosta Valley, Fenis strikes visitors with its triumph of towers and crenellated walls. The castle sits on flat ground, which is unusual; Aimone de Challant improved it by building an impressive defensive system, which also features double curtain walls. However, more than being a fortress, the Fenis castle was a prestigious and refined residence: the courtyard and the rooms inside are rich in frescoes - the result of a decorating campaign started by Aimone’s son, Bonifacio in all likelihood. Not to miss is the famous St. George slaying the dragon by Jacquerio and his school, on the stone semicircular courtyard staircase. Many of the furnishings present, which are not original to the castle, were purchased by Alfredo d’Andrade, then Superintendent of Fine Arts, who supervised the restoration work at the end of the nineteenth century thus restoring the castle to its former glory.

Bad experience due to the ticket office as they did not accept the cultural passport for children (donated by the hospital) even though it is the same as the museum pass. We had to pay two entrance tickets even though I had also called before coming (we live in Turin) and I had assured me that it was valid so as not to pay for entry.
I showed on the museum subscription site that the passport was also valid for the castle of Fenis but they didn't want to know and I had to pay anyway. The outside is large but the inside is very small and with very few things to see. The only positive thing was the guide (a gentleman) who in half an hour explained everything there was to say about the castle.

This beautiful castle can only be visited with a guided tour. The tour is in Italian only. In about 30 minutes, you are quickly whisked through the castle. Beautiful rooms with frescos and in the rooms explanations are given on signs in Italian, French and English.

We enjoyed a guided tour of the castle. The guide was able to keep the attention of the group and gave interesting highlights. The structure is super well preserved, in particular frescos are admirable. A must to visit if you are in Fenis

Very interesting and perfectly formed castle with fascinating frescoes and decor inside, particularly in the courtyard. Can only be visited as part of a guided tour which is only available in Italian. Entry is 7 euros, well worth it because it has so many unique elements. It is a bit of a trek up from the main car park (a 10-12 minute climb uphill).

First visit to Valle d'Aosta and I decide to book in Fenis as a starting point. First visit castle of Fenis show, for me who love the medieval period. After a climb, you enter history, with furniture of the time but, not originally from the castle as plundered in time, and thanks to the guide, whom I congratulate for his skill, it was possible to grasp the details of construction of the building over time allowing you to view almost its old inhabitants intent and busy in everyday life. Wonderful the balcony and its frescoes as the small area intended for church. Great. Visit him.

we re-visit Fénis castle after a first visit in June 2018.
we loved it the first time and we loved it this time too.
located on a small promontory without natural defenses, it is certainly one of the most famous manors -
and I would say the most beautiful - of all of the Aosta Valley. not only thanks to its external appearance.
towers, crenellated walls and loopholes give the structure the classic image of
medieval castle.
it houses some of the most famous Gothic style pictorial cycles in Northern Italy,
commissioned by the powerful and renowned Challant family.
The guided tour included in the entrance ticket is interesting and well structured.

While in the Aosta area, we visited this beautiful castle. The tour however was only in Italian but we went along anyway. It has been beautiful restored with amazing frescoes in the chapel. There are English note/guides in all the rooms, so you can understand what the rooms were used for. Lovely fresco of St George slaying the dragon. Enjoyed the visit.

It is the most famous castle in the valley and with good reason. Only guided tours take place which last approximately 40 minutes. The courtyard is splendid with the staircase, the balconies and, above all, the paintings. I recommend booking through the dedicated platform to avoid queuing at the ticket office first and then having to wait perhaps an hour for your turn.

Very interesting activity to do for those who are in this area. The castle is very beautiful, in medieval style and with renovations that do not compromise the quality of the complex. The price of the ticket (€9, with the possibility of a discount if you have a ticket for the Bard fort) includes a guide that explains the history of the castle in detail.

Posso visitare il castello solo all’esterno?
Cordiali saluti
A presto
