There is a souvenir showroom overthere where goods are overpriced. There is nothing much to do there. One can avoid Amar Kutir if you have a tight schedule.

A beautiful long drive lead us to this amazing, quiet and dignified place. A baul sat singing under a corner, swans roamed freely.the entire place is huge but so clean. We spend around 30k here on gifts for everyoneback home. Everything was so cheap and beautifully made. The old uncles who are the salesmen here,Don't hassle you to buy anything. You are free to roam and buy things at your leisure. Everyone is very warm and welcoming and helpful. They have a beautiful collection of sarees, kurtas, home decor, bags amongst other things. Will surely visit again.

Overall the attractions at Shantiniketan are the university and the shona jhuri haat that is a flea market on weekends. The flea market is worth a visit. You get a lot of good stuff at very reasonable rates. No bargaining happens, prices are mostly fixed but quality is good. For stay, there are a few homestays that offer very good local cuisine.

Amar Kutir society for rural development - a place worth visiting for rural Bengal arts & crafts. They have a good collection of saaris specially the famous kantha stich, bed spreads, dress materials, varieties of handicrafts to choose from.
Located in a calm & quiet place far from the town, the river Kopai flows at the back of Amar Kutir.

Perhaps this was due to the effect of the pandemic - but the place barely had any good stock of items such as bags, curios, decor - all the items that make for easy souvenirs!
I expected a lot more - and found a better variety of stuff at the Sonajhuri ghat!

The amar kutir shop is a worthy place to hang on.I bought some garments which were of very good quality and a nominal value.Nothing is overpriced here. The staff here are very much trained and treat customers with courtesy. For 1thing you buy they display 1000 options. The amar kutir hesel ghar was an add on.Authentic bengali cuisine served and people are fed on kansa plates and with love. The people who serve ask you repeatedly if you need anything.Overall a complete one destination stop.
