Had been to the 'mandaps' of both the branches of the family. The images were modelled in traditional forms. Terracotta panels of the temples on the premises are very impressive

Rajbari is not a correct description of this place as one of the residents inside told us . It is a zamindarbari. There is no signage to the place so use Google map. There was no one in the premises when we reached. The entry is free and why not as it is just a large house where Durga Puja is held. We could see the goddess statue made of straw. The saving grace is that the house has been kept clean. No signboard at all. Perhaps the only point of interest is the old Krishna mandir next door made with lovely terracotta .

If you want to have a feel of the nineteenth century Bengali aristocrat household feel then this is the place one should visit. You can relate to it in some period teleserials

The rajbari is at Surul, Shantiniketan. I thought there will be entry fee or other restrictions, but surprisingly a helpful passer by showed us in. The place is very educational to young people as they will have a first hand vision of a Bengali Kong's house. There are three small temples with terracotta engraving all around.

Surul is a village near Visva-Bharati University Sriniketan campus, Surul consists of a large population of Bagdis, Bauris, Haris and Doms, as well as weavers. The Sarkar's who were Zamindars of this Birbhum District brought in Brahmins and other upper castes. The Sarkar family at Surul had contributed a vital role towards socio-economic development of the overall area and also towards establishment of Visva-Bharati, an Institution of National Importance.
Durga puja of Surul Zamindar family is very famous.

This rajbari carries the tradition of Durgapuja every year. Visitors can see the Thakurdalan (where worshipping takes place), the lovely artistry of the rajbari also the shiv temple around with lovely vishnupur art.
