About
In the early 1950's, a group of winemakers from Pico Island, aware of the need of a structure that could offer good production an economic conditions, decided to form the Cooperativa Vitivinícola da Ilha do Pico (CVIP), having as its goal the production of common and liquor wines from the quality grape varieties - Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico. Since the early 90s, following important experimental work, significant steps were taken to improve the quality of all wines, including the introduction of new varieties that replaced the vineyards of direct producers in parallel with the renewal of the plantation of traditional quality varieties, with all production benefiting from the technological innovations introduced in our winery. Currently, CVIP has about 250 active members producing grapes used to make our genuine wines.

Sharp and succulent local wines.
The grapes for this winery are hand picked on the island then processed, bottled and marketed from here.
The wine is of a very high quality for the more discerning palate.
Wine tasting €9 for 3 wines.
Sommelier was engaging and knowledgeable, portions generous and good choice of wines.
5 minutes walk from the harbour.

The place is popular, with tastings run like clockwork by a very diligent young lady (better not be early or come without booking).
The place is charmless (an ageing wine factory). The windowless “bar” is a corner of the factory with a surface to pour drinks where you have to dodge forklifts. There is no explanation of the wine making process beyond a few generalities. The wines are overall in my opinion pretty poor but that is certainly a question of taste (the desert wine is excellent). Prices are high. The least pleasurable activity we did in Pico so far.

I had so many good Pico Wines during my week in Azores, so when I found out so many of them are produced by Pico Wines Cooperative I just had to visit them whilst I was in Pico. I'm glad I did because I learnt so much about wines from the region during the informative winery tour and the wine tasting was a great experience to try their different wines. Highly recommend this experience for anyone interested in wine!

I agree with everything the previous reviewer said. We arrived one minute late and were scolded. I didn't enjoy the wines, although I think Pico wines in general are not my thing. Please consider putting someone more personable and friendly to run the tastings, as they are what make or break the experience. My least favorite wine tasting ever.

Our guide was very engaging and explained the process of wine making although the winery itself wasn't particularly spectacular. The main event was the tasting. We bought a few bottles to drink while we are on the islands - so best to visit a few days before your next flight to give yourself a chance to get through your wine rather than chancing it in hold luggage!

I just went to the cooperative (it was 18.20) but the kindly told us that the wine tasting could have been done until 18 - despite there were 4 people having a tasting.
On Google and also here on TripAdvisor the opening time shown is until 8 pm!

Hello L1748AYsilviat, We are sorry you were not able to do a tasting at that hour. We are now only doing wine tastings until 18h because it is harvest season. The people you saw doing tastings after that hour began sooner, before 18h, and were at the final wines. We hope you can visit us again! Best regards, Sara Jorge

The coop is the biggest wine producer in Pico. They have tastings and wine tours of the facilities. The staff were friendly, very knowledgeable and spoke great English. We loved the whites, not so much the reds. A must.

During a recent trip to Pico Island, my husband and I stopped at the wine coop around 3:30pm on a Monday afternoon. I did the 3-wine tasting and my husband did the 5-wine tasting. We were able to choose from a selection of red, white, and rose wines for our tasting which even included a fortified wine. Our server explained all the wines and answered all of our questions. We thought the white wine was best but they were really all very good. We ended up purchasing two bottles and a t-shirt to take home!

I wish I could remember the tour guide's name, she was amazing --- so knowledgeable, interesting and has a great sense of humor. We had a quick tour during which time we learned about the history of wine making on the island and about how to make wine. This was followed by a very tasty, informative and generous wine tasting. If you would like to learn about local wines, I highly recommend this visit.
