The museum is a great place to discover the origins of Ayurveda and it's benefits. It is built in serene surroundings with beautiful, ancient architecture.
The curator is very passionate and knowledgeable in this ancient science. We wanted to spend just 1 hour but ended up spending delightful 3 hours. A must visit!

The ayurveda museum is one of its kind in the country. The museum is situated in a small place known as "Thaikkattusserry" in Thrissur. Not many people know the place and you will have to ask the auto fellow to take you to the museum which is near the Vaidyaratnam ayurveda Hospital. The entrance fee is Rs.50. The ayurveda museum first gives us a brief history of ayurveda through a short film. After the film, we move on to the museum where we first see the original herbs/plant extracts which are used in the Ayurvedic medicines.
The museum is extremely well kept and the entire history of ayurveda is displayed through statues and replicas. Since the museum is owned by the Vaidyaratnam Thaikkattu Moos family, there is much about their family history. The museum is housed in a two storied traditional kerala house with the upper floor consisting of rare 3D photographs and display of the original ayurvedic herbs.

There are no shops nearby and it's better to carry your own bottle of water. There is however a small restaurant opposite the museum, but don't expect great food there.
The whole visit to the museum will not take more than an hour.

Since we are keralites, language was not an issue. However I believe the guide at the museum speaks English.

Don't expect to buy ayurvedic products from there as the museum does not have a stall. However, the ayurvedic medicine manufacturing unit is just a stone's throw away from the museum.

While coming back from the museum, rely on public transport if you don't have your own vehicle. The security guard at the entrance will be glad to help you.

P.S Photography is prohibited inside the museum. The guide very politely asked me to stop taking photographs inside. Hence am not posting the inside pics.

I should probably start by saying that I think in the west there is an expectation that museums are, on the whole, objective. If you visit a museum about medicine you expect an objective and historically accurate account and not, as here, a display designed to promote one particular organisation.

They show two films, one anti Big Pharma (a view I have much sympathy with) and the other a history of Ayurvedic medicine that, in its simplistic explanations, is more myth and magic than facts and details.

The adjacent building mrely replicates, through a series of static models, all the scenes in the second film. The guide, who is very nice and friendly, is very keen to get my email address so he can send me details about treatments in their hospital.

I think this museum is nothing more than a sales pitch for their ccollege and treatment facilities, and I was very disappointed. I have a genuine interest in Ayurvedic medicine and was disappointed to be offered nothing of any depth or detail.

I particularly disliked the way the second film suggested that the founders of this organisation were almost direct descendants of the original discoverers of Ayurvedic medicine.
