The Kootenay Ferry takes about 30 minutes to cross the lake. Boarding is quick without a long wait. Good eats at the café next to boarding site. This was an lovely experience and FREE. How can you top that?

The Kootenay Ferry takes a 35 minute trip across the lake. If travelling towards Crawdford Bay, the food is great the artisans are superb crafts folk. STAY AWAY from the Yasodhara Ashram. It is bug infested and if you expect to practice yoga at this ashram, think again. They will however ask you to journal about Not practicing yoga. Have... More

We didn't wait long in line to board the ferry but waited a half hour before it left. I'm not sure what the reason is. Still, it was a nice experience...and free! It is a short ride, maybe 10-15 minutes to cross the lake.

This is a great option to travel across Kootenay Lake and relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery! The ferry is free and there is a coffee shop and other little shops at the parking lot.

Nice free ferry journey from Balfour across the Kootenay Lake. Efficient loading & unloading, coffee (good) & some foods/snacks plus clean toilets. Saves miles on the road & has good views throughout the trip.

I've been travelling north from CDA to ride this ferry for years. It's always a pleasure and I love bringing friends to experience it for themselves. Great scenery, easy loading/unloading, friendly staff. You have to get a coffee at the shack in Kootenay bay before hopping on. Great oso negro coffee from Nelson. I never tire of watching the shoreline... More

Efficient and scenic, enjoyed the high deck for a view. The sun was shining which was nice. There is a snack bar and coffee, clean flush toilets.

Found out about this wonderful service by mistake after we realised we couldnt cross the lake by road. While in Nelson we discovered we would need to use this ferry. Couldn't believe it was free and so well organised with service and loading of vehicles. The views during the trip are some of the best I encounted in Canada. Saw... More
