This place is located about 15 km from Kratie. The best time to see the dolphins is early morning about 7-8 am when there are no tourists. You can rent a motorbike from Kratie for about 5$/day and go there on your own (Tuk tuk - 10$ return). The entrance fee is 9$ per person but if there are more than 2 people you will pay only 7$/pp. For me it was a really interesting experience to see the dolphins in their natural habitat.
When you will be on the boat ask the driver to use the motor as little as possible so you can get closer to the dolphins.

On Dr T5's recommendation we got hold of Sok Chheat after discovering Green Kratie tours had closed. Some met us and took us in his tuk tuk to Kampi from Kratie, through fur villages and rice paddies along the Mekong. He explained the way of life and the dolphin project in conjunction with local empowerment.
At Kampi, we got a small wooden boat and chugged to the middle of the river, where we tied up and drifted in the current, watching for dolphins. We saw a pod of about 10 and spent an hour with them. Incredible! Afterwards, we ate road side food with Sok, went to the temple on the hill and then went to his village and had dinner with him and his beautiful family.
A great day, in which we learnt a lot and were treated to genuine hospitality. We can highly recommend you contact Sok if you want a real experience.

We headed to Kampi from kratie on a tuk tuk. There really is enough to fill a day! We had the most incredible guide who spoke English really well and was quite passionate about showing us the local sights- he included a well timed trip to see the Dolphins (spectacular), and an hour or two basking in the Rapids on the Mekong, a climb up sambok mountain, a temple and the turtle sanctuary. He was so great we booked him for a second day and got to experience a bunch of local villages first hand- we saw a family mushroom production facility, many local foods, how to make rice noodles, we met so many friendly, welcoming people- a day to treasure- it was the most non touristy genuine experience we have had. We ended up at his home in the village where he and his wife cooked us an amazing meal. His prices were far cheaper than any other tours we found but even if they weren't it would have been worth it. His name is Sok Cheat 011564922/0969156669

After you have visited the Dolphins, I suggest you to go to that nice place.
You will enjoy very good Khmer food, serenity and to take a bath in the Mekong River.
You can also take a hamac for a rest then take very nice pictures!

we took a kayaking tour of Mekong in order to see the dolphins. we saw plenty of them and the kayaking experience was the best we could imagine to truly feel the nature around. Shortly after the dolphin spot; there is an enjoyable place to chill right by the river rapids. Plenty of bars: its a perfect spot to chill out in a hamac.

Many tourists are attracted to Kratie because of the chance of seeing the rare Irrawaddy dolphins that inhabit the stretch of river between here and the Laos border to the north. In fact there are only about 85 remaining according to the latest estimates. They have been caught in fishermen's nets, injured by speeding boats so now there is a conservation project to try and protect them. Kampi is about 20 kms north of Kratie and you can reach there by bike or hire a tuk tuk. Once there you have to pay a few dollars to be taken out in a boat where the boatman will turn off the engine and hopefully a few dolphins will surface. It is hard to get a photo of them as they just appear at the surface and quickly go underwater again. I clicked my camera about 30 times before managing to get a half decent photo. I must admit i feel a little sad seeing these wonderful creatures that may soon be extinct. Once the boatman takes you back to the shore there are a few souvenir shops with mostly wood carvings for sale.

This is where you go to see dolphins. It's about 15 kms north of Kratie. Small wooden motorised boats take you out on the Mekong to spot and follow the dolphins. The scenary is beautiful, especially at the end of the afternoon and sunset. Most of the skippers are conscious of not getting too close to the dolphins and turning off their engines, but some are not. Sometimes it felt like we were chasing them and this was not a good feeling. But it was amazing to see such wild, and tragically, critically endangered species in their natural habitat. A balance needs to be struck...

Kampi is the best place to observe the Mekong Dolphin in its natural habitat. Kampi is about a 15k drive north of Kratie.
Very popular location for swimming. January - May is the ideal time.
