Naturally formed cave where the subterranean lakes provide a unique light that is sometimes deceptive. The tours start on the hour and last about an hour. Guide gives a lot of information. The cave was linked to the legend of Emperor Barbarossa, who would sleep in a subterranean cave and wake up every 100 years to go back to sleep until he had to restore peace in Germany. The cave is accessible via a long tunnel. The exit is reached via a staircase with 66 steps. A beautiful walking path takes you back to the entrance.

This is a very different cave and worth the trip for that reason. If you come, you are coming for the cave. The tour is not expensive, but it is in German with no audio translation. For that reason, it is helpful to research the cave beforehand so you can somewhat follow the tour. This cave has over 900 years of history dating back to Kaiser Barbarossa and they lived in the cave so it is damaged from those times, but still worth the trip.

We stayed in Bad Frankenhausen as our base. It was lovely and relaxing, but if we had to do it over again since we are into caves and geology, we would have stayed in Saalfeld and done this as a day trip. There is more geology to see there.

The caves here are not like anything we had seen before - the rock is of a type that produces Gypsum and there are Gypsum 'cloths' all over the roof making different and beautiful patterns.
The visit is by guided tour. Although it was in German they had given us a very good handout in English which gave detailed information and was well written. The guide did speak some English and answered a couple of questions. He was very good - interaction with the children in the group etc.
Would definitely recommend. We used our Harz Card for entry

Very unusually formed caves with a number of lakes. It has to be visited with a guide who provides a lot of interesting information. The tour is in German, but audio guides are available in other languages. There are lots of photo opportunities, but a small fee has to be paid for permission to take photos. The caves can also be hired for events (parties, weddings, concerts, etc.).
Visit takes about an hour and is well worth while and can be accompanied by children. The "GeoPark" in which it is located offers lots of opportunities for walks and other activities.
Note: The tour starts on the hour - don't turn up at 5 past, or you will have to wait! However, there is a lot of interesting information to read and look at in the entrance, so wait doesn't have to be boring.

The woman at the country was very friendly. Headsets for different languages are available if you are willing to leave your driver's license or some other ID as collateral. It was an enjoyable walk and not too long, although the climb at the end is a bit steep if you don't do a lot of walking. We both have mobility issues and managed it very well though. But the entrance into the cave is a little slippery!!

We felt it was definitely worth the visit and one of the best things in Germany, aside from family.

Worth a visit. Some spectacular caves. Don't think they see many Brits this Far East so nothing written in English but ask at the ticket office and they'll give you an iPod with English commentary. It's free and worth taking. One tip.. It's blooming cold underground so take a coat in with you. Also, take your own torch so you can explore bits the guide doesn't show you

A very good trip to see this cave and don't forget to enjoy the bratwurst sold here also. Unfortunately as I'm not fluent in German I struggled to understand a lot of the information from the tour guide but for the sheer beauty of the cave it was worth it.

The world of lights is a highlight for the already beautiful cave. The staff are super friendly, both at the ticket office and in the cave. We were very happy and enjoyed the lighting and the sound.
